This is not how to deal with climate change.

Like holy shit the water off Florida is over 100F. It's a hot tub, These people I swear to fuck

Blort™ 🐀Ⓥ🥋☣️

@georgetakei I wonder if our bodies are also supposed to build up a tolerance to mass extinction, loss of food sources, floods and wildfires? 🤔

Mix

@Blort @georgetakei Yeah, it’s called a selection pressure in evolutionary biology 😂. Doesn’t work out well for individuals though.

Corporate and government translation:

It is currently profitable to ignore climate change, and so we would rather you find away to accept climate change as the norm. Or at the very least, not look at us to resolve it, even though we are the leading cause, and point the finger at yourself and others. - But not us, we're busy making money!

Nachtwind

@georgetakei

"Your body can build up tolerance to car crashes. Here's how."

"Your body can build up tolerance to drowning. Here's how"

....

One should just point out that the species (Yes. I still think they were a species!) of Neanderthals, which was superior in many ways to Sapiens, just died out at a way slower climate change happening 10kyr ago... THEY had time adapting.. yet noone here has their eyebrows..

@georgetakei Denialism is a real thing. I weep for my children’s generation. It really feels like Gen X is the last generation who will have experienced normality.

@georgetakei
This kind of #PerseverancePorn is such a predictable response from those who benefit from the status quo

Kurt Vonnegut had it right - we Will be the first species to extinctify itself because the alternative wasn't Cost Effective

Yep and at 38°celsius + 100% wet air you die within minutes

Holdfast

@chrisfed @georgetakei Actually, 100% humidity will cause you problems at much lower temperatures than that. As a child, I spent a couple of years at near 0% humidity at well over 40C.
It is the combination of already high humidity and ever higher temperatures that is killing people.
As far as I understand it, plants don't mind high humidity. Just the 40+ temperatures that we are now getting.

Brian Anderson (He/Him)

@georgetakei listen pal, the weather on Venus is WAY hotter than this and you don’t hear the people there complaining, do you? DO YOU? Toughen up, buttercup…

@georgetakei LMAO. I just read this article and Takei beat me to it. His take is perfect (because it is what I was thinking) so I will not expound.

Skeptic

@georgetakei
I saw a TV news story that Phoenix area Emergency Rooms were having to treat burns on people who had passed out from heat exhaustion onto sidewalks so hot they burned them. The GOP has become a death cult, but they can't be allowed to kill everyone else. #ClimateCrisis

Arto Koistinen

@georgetakei oh wow I guess us Finns have nothing to worry about then 😂

Ursula Katherine Spiller

@georgetakei
It's not. But we still have to do it. It's too late not to.

Julian 🇺🇦

@georgetakei the Washington Post is owned by Jeff Bezos, so what do you expect?

Hunter Perrin

@georgetakei Hey, maybe billionaires can build up tolerance to being eaten.

Graydon

@georgetakei And it's false in the relevant sense.

Yes, you can acclimate to some specific range of heat. Past a certain wet bulb temperature, it is not so; when it's that hot, the great grim gods of thermodynamics shall cause you to die.

We're in the first blushing springtime seasons of a world where if the air conditioning fails, you die. If the power goes out, it's a mass casualty event. (Good luck running away over melted roads.)

spmatich :blobcoffee:

@georgetakei yep. I remember something about boiling a frog, best to do it slowly.

Zonkerh

@georgetakei I have some experience in adapting to heat as a professional marathon runner. The current heat wave is not something our bodies can learn to tolerate. We’re in an emergency situation and we’re not recognizing it.

Charles Corbett

@georgetakei the existential threat of wet bulb temperatures needs to be discussed more

Kevin Leecaster

@chas @georgetakei
The #ClimateAction that people can take to actually implement #ClimateSolutions needs to be discussed more.

Charles Corbett

@GreenFire @georgetakei Except nobody in any position of power freaking cares. Discuss wet bulb temps so they can understand the literal hell they will face with inaction. Remind them their air conditioning won't save them.

Kevin Leecaster

@chas @georgetakei
Here in the U.S. we got the biggest #ClimateAction passed in the history of the universe so to say that "nobody in any position of power freaking cares" is just a lie just as bad as are the ones coming from the #FossilFools but whatever.

Sloan Studio

@georgetakei Yeah, your body cannot adapt to the temps we are seeing, at a certain point sweat evaporation does nothing. We are pretty adaptable compared to many species, but people are dying because there are limits.

Battle Masker

@georgetakei how long til The Onion responds to this with a "Your body can build up bullet tolerance" article?

Judy With The Booty🌈

@georgetakei does that also work for how much food or fertile/livable land we need? Just to be weened off it.🥲

Greg Dance

@georgetakei

That’s fine for Repugs & their vile conservative sound alikes,

Just look at where they all must have been born & raised!

To them it’s a home coming to them!

M Ross

@georgetakei hell, people who have lived in hot countries all their lives can't even deal with it.

Deron

@georgetakei Hmm… a hypothesis that the frog test seems to contradict.

Gary James

@georgetakei Over sixty thousand people across Europe died in 2022 due to the heatwave(s). This year looks to be a tad milder, so hopefully things aren't going to be as bad in that regard.

There are wildfires everywhere instead. *sigh*

marki

@georgetakei as someone with multiple sclerosis, no the fuck i cannot

regeya

@georgetakei I grew up in a hot, humid climate. My ancestors came from temperate trending towards chilly places. I've always lived with heat and humidity. I grew up with air conditioning but my parents had an attitude of no AC until it was super hot. Grandparents never had AC. I've never acclimated. This article is crazy

Fardels Bear

@georgetakei

This is like saying, "Whatever doesn't kill you makes stronger." The reality is that you get weaker with every encounter until you die.

DELETED

@georgetakei And if only our trouble ahead was related to body tolerance, haha! Besides, your body will stop caring about your tolerance at 35 C wet bulb temperature.

Seb

@georgetakei Actually it is. Humans and many other beings have survived for so long because they changed with their environment. It's only now we're so detached from our natural surroundings because somewhere in the past we told ourselves we're separate from nature. Which funny enough is also the reason we got ourselves into this mess. #ClimateChange #Climate #Adapt #Change #Adaption #Transformation #Science #Biology

Paul Wermer

@seb_tmg @georgetakei Seb, you're confusing comfort with survival.

You quickly run into problems when the body cannot get rid of excess heat, and that is constrained by ambient temperature and humidity.

Seb

@PaulWermer @georgetakei Exactly we have biological limits. But we still need to adapt and adjust. We are not able to revert this mess. And more important learn from that huge mistake we made many years ago.

sri

@georgetakei Good grief - what about all the plants and trees?? I mean even if you were to believe this bullshit - youre food supply doesn't have a tolerance to heat.

Florrie

@georgetakei I love this: Climate Solutions - Just build up tolerance.
Right. Better we learn how to adapt to living in hell on earth than make our corporate overlords change their business practices.

docht

@georgetakei
They frame the climate crisis as a problem which can be solved on the individual level. What they really mean is: "Shame on you if you can't cope with the heat. You better work out."

This reminds me of the term "carbon footprint" which was coined by the fossil fuel industry. It's always about shifting responsibility to the individual.

Jessica Cheeri

@georgetakei Looks like the Bezosphere has shifted to the "too late to do anything about it" stage of refusing to do anything

Travis Scott

@georgetakei How will those poor corporations ignoring externalities making record profits do of they behaved responsibly?
