Gregory's ServerPhotographers and artists rejoice—just like in the official iOS and Android apps, pictures are no longer cropped to 16:9 on the web version of Mastodon. Link previews have also gotten a face lift, and will now show both the article date and author when available.

@Gargron I notice media is now showing included with toots in the notifications on the web, can this be toggled?  @mattswift Thanks for clarifying. I always had that setting off anyway. Although it had some advantages, eg when people post comic strips that tend to be high and narrow.   @Twitter_expat @Gargron what's the change in behaviour? I have found the behaviour of link previews to be highly variable, including between website and apps. Tbh, I'm not sure what gives the most reliable experience. I just want a link, the title and a little picture associated with it.  @Gargron Will link previews support WebP and AVIF? Limit is on home feed and other feeds, but not within threads. Works for me, as I don't have trust issues with image height in the threads I'm opening. 😁 What bothers me is that many clients do not follow the focus point on images which have it set via Mastodon web interface. It cuts off the image to 16:9 aspect ratio in the wrong position, when viewed through other clients. 🤔 You already have your answer, but I'll confirm with another detail. I use the advanced desktop UI (the one with the columns) and it not only takes up a large space in the feed, but when I expand it, it is expanded but super narrow with no way to zoom to 100% on a click, so it's illegible on both the timeline and on the click. @ericheiken @feditips @Gargron Lack of zoom makes detalized photo and, especially, art sharing here a lost cause, IMO. Hopefully the steps we're taking to provide feedback is all it takes to improve the experience. It's a relatively young software, so don't lose hope. @ericheiken @feditips @Gargron Yeah! Your 'hard' problems are the same problems that all the other sites have, but you have a better chance of solving them, because you don't have to also appease profit-hungry investors. @Gargron awesome, just slap a limit on the max height so troll pictures get folded (click to unfold) and it’s perfect @r00tAdmin yeah, folding might be better though because sometimes you are not a troll but want to share a long long image :)   @Gargron Nice, thanks. @Gargron Just saw the new link previews on mastodon.social, they are very good! @Gargron thanks! in genera it would be nice if the platform became a photographers-friendly, so people could also move from instagram. For example, there it’s not possible to view high-res images. Posting some food - sure, enjoying art - meh. @запаскобас Do you know #Pixelfed? It's to Instagram what Mastodon is to Twitter, and it's federated with Mastodon.
