I suspect that Mastodon will never be as big as Twitter once was. But I don’t mind: I first used it in 2017 and I’m glad that it’s now a lively space, especially for tech.

I’m curious what keeps Twitter users from moving here:
– Personally, I rarely miss search.
– Quote posts are being worked on.
– Some people say it’s too complicated but I don’t understand why.

And there are several great features that Twitter doesn’t have: temporary muting, content warnings for spoilers, etc.

@rauschma searching through my own posts or my own followers' posts is nice sometimes, i like to see what my friends are saying about something at times. but i'd rather not have it at all if it curbs harassment

@rauschma - too many options for instances, no good way to find the right one, unclear messaging about switching instances and how hard or easy that is, followers/followees are lost and not easy to reobtain, etc.

I think the biggest issue is marketing though, or complete and utter lack of marketing

@caitp Makes sense!

> followers/followees are lost and not easy to reobtain

Not my experience: I switched several times. Posts were left behind but followers and followed were easy to migrate.

@rauschma I don't mean lost when migrating across instances, but migrating from different platforms -- however I expect people do worry about that too

@rauschma I think it's two fold for me…

1) it's just habit, I always liked Tech Twitter and have a hard time letting go. 😅And really can't believe that it’ll managed to the ground or all people that made it great are driven out.

2) the algorithm — as much as I dislike the algo timeline, as a blogger / newsletter author the algo can sometimes play nicely in your favor to grow reach.

That said though, I'm trying to give Mastodon more of my time, bc every new week brings more 💩 over there.

@rauschma

I think it's sometimes some people will follow the rule of "better the devil you know than the devil you don't know"

Other points:

1- I found people saying and myself faced at the beginning it's how the algorithm works in Mastodon.

2- The interface and multi-tabs local/Fed/Home/Explore do some misunderstanding for people it isn't looking straightforward.

3- With the servers and all this diversity, some will prefer a big monolith.

@rauschma I don't know if Mastodon doing marketing or not.

But yeah they need a good and reliable marketing strategy even an organic one somehow.

@rauschma Using @MonaApp, I never even realize that quote toots are not a native feature. Honestly I see them used a LOT too.

@rauschma i think it is just being a pyramid head.

living life according to what is "normal" instead of living it for one's own convictions.

nornal means, house, job, listening to authorities, using react and typescript as a frontend dev, until authorities hype something else, ....and so many other things.

it is easy.
it means just copy what majority does no questions asked.

for sure mastodon gets registered but not as the dominant thing.

...it's the mainstream pattern sadly

@serapath @rauschma lol xD. Some of us use TypeScript because we genuinely like strong typing, independently of its current popularity 😅, and yet, we are anarchists and live non-typical lifes! 😃

@rauschma I miss search a lot, even if just for my own posts. Quote posts is a vex, but not a big deal.

For non-technical users, having to choose a server, the endless discussion of why that is, and the lecturing over why it is better. The endless admonishment over etiquette, the lists. The intensity of ND behaviour, which is diluted on other platforms. The lack of access to public service accounts.

I’m still here and you’re one of the first people I followed, but it can be hard work here.

@rauschma So it’s not just features, is what I’m saying. There are huge cultural hurdles. The Fediverse is useless for news or updates about public transport. I can’t find out about a water main being shut down here.

Also, there are some who are aggressively zealous here about here. That alienates people and discourages them from staying. It’s like joining a weird cult, and you have to prove you want it enough to be allowed to stay.

But I’m still here!
