Even if you don’t use Chrome, you still use the Chromium engine if you use DuckDuckGo, Vivaldi, Brave, Qutebrowser, Edge, or Opera, so Google ultimately controls your browser. They recently published a paper on adding DRM to Chromium which was the last straw for many people.
Realistically, your only other browser choices are those based on Gecko (Firefox) or WebKit (Safari).
