@gamesbymanuel @Illuminatus what about the creator? The writer, the musician? I’m often asked where my books can be downloaded for free yet writing is how I make a living. Piracy is definitely stealing!

@sheilaoflanagan I'm not saying that piracy is not stealing, just that it is increasingly obvious that digital ownership can very easily be revoked.

I am a creator as well, but half of my portfolio is no longer accessible because it's either been removed from app stores or went out of print. It is very frustrating, and I have no issue with people "pirating" them since it's the only way they'll still be around.

@gamesbymanuel I agree there has to be a better way for a buyer to retain ownership while the creator is also paid. I’m not sure what that is and it’s frustrating that there isn’t protection for both buyer and creator when it comes to digital ownership

@sheilaoflanagan @gamesbymanuel That's the thing: as much as the debate was presented to be about the creators, it's always been about the corporations exploiting their work. Music piracy tanked to almost nihil the moment streaming services appeared, and did that mean artists were paid more regularly, better, or more fairly? Nope, instead the platforms squeezed most of them more and more, transferring the business from the big discographic companies to themselves.

@sheilaoflanagan @gamesbymanuel Cory Doctorow has written thousands of pages on this phenomenon and given it a name: "enshittification", which is basically the consequence of capitalism, consolidation, garden-walling, and the search for perpetual growth in the face of its impossibility in material reality.
