What I don't understand is why doesn't this effect how copyright can be used. You shouldn't be able to benefit from locking a work from view and still be able to keep control of it. Where's the benefit to creativity, corporate or individual, much less the public?

@Silversalty @gamesbymanuel Garden-fencing, privatisation of the public space, extracting the last drop of surplus value. Pure capitalism, in summary.

That's part of it. If government empowered copyright also enables grabbing a quick buck from blocking the public from access, that power should only be allowed for a short time. Say 10 yrs.

Pick one or the other. Quick buck or long term investment.

@Silversalty @gamesbymanuel @Illuminatus Maybe we should take a page out of patent right here: Copyright on digital items is only a right if there is a fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory way to purchase a copy that has no technical restrictions on it. Producers may choose to use DRM, but then they forfeit legal means.

Until that is the law, "piracy" can be viewed as a form of civil disobedience, provided that properly sold media (or their torrents) is instantly removed from the sites.

Not sure what to 'say.' Ever use a program called COPYiiPC? The rights powers are so broad now. Drugs are like media with enormous powers derived from access control. Is Avatar worth more than a cure for a widespread illness? Should they be handled similarly? Ever read Cory Doctorow? I no longer have the focus, sorry.
