@aroom @joenepraat @pixelfed that’s what .com was meant to be over a quarter century ago, and it would be nice had that stuck, but it lost that distinction long ago for most folks, unfortunately @sbm It still is. Open source projects are mostly not using a .com domain. One of the options to turn the tide of people using commercial services is to use the proper terminology. Of course you can do a redirect and than saying to people: 'you came here via great-fedi-project.com, but we are non-commercial, so we redirected you to great-fedi-project.org'. @sbm @joenepraat @pixelfed well .com domain and .social are quite different though .social is less confusing in my opinion for a social network. Edit: that being said I welcome a new instance. I think that it’s really good to avoid big instances. @pfefferle No, our implementation is a bit different and uses a centralized service we maintain. I'll be writing more about this in a future https://pixelfed.blog post, and perhaps we should migrate our blog to Wordpress with your amazing plugin! @pixelfed When you say "migrate" does that mean migrating just followers or also migrating images, like you've done from Instagram? I'm very interested in this, but I've uploaded so many images to a specific instance, and find it hard to move away if I must manually upload them all again. Appreciate any info you might be able to share and thanks for all your hard work! :blob_cat_heart: @pixelfed With all due respect this is EXACTLY the wrong move. Centralization is the opposite of what the Fediverse is about. @WhyNotZoidberg @pixelfed They're not making anything more centralized, just starting up a new instance that people can use if they wish to. @pixelfed and there are plenty of popular websites / services using .org just like Wikipedia(.org)! It's the most known online encyclopedia and almost the most know website of all time after Google. I think it should be memorable, and creating pixelfed.com could hurt the whole Pixelfed project, because those, who understand what it means, would assume it's commercial, and overall it'd create false information about Pixelfed and the Fediverse. Don't do misinfo, please. @pixelfed Are you sure .com is the best TLD? It suggests that this Pixelfed instance is commercial in some way. I think .org or .net would be a better, more accurate choice. We are keeping pixelfed.social open and will not be forcing migration or closing it down, just thought we should clarify! @pixelfed the import process is frankly painful. Constant fails and slow. Any suggestions? I've been trying to migrate from Instagram to Pixelfed for a week and only managed to move 136 photos out of 500+ @pixelfed a lot of nay sayers here, and while i understand their reservations, and agree with the idealism. ...for a wider reach and adoption, .com is the correct move. it's unfortunately just how the average person views the internet. websites just aren't taken serious or trusted by the greater whole unless they are on a .com domain, wikipedia is not a food example as it is just old enough to be able to continue its existence on .org, but, it's an exception, not the rule. @pixelfed am I able to interact with pixelfed.social through mastodon.social? is that what it means to be federated? @pixelfed I think this is a good move. Too many people don't understand the new .whatever extensions. Mainstream adoption should be the goal @pixelfed .social feels much better for a fediverse project than a .com domain, +1 for just a redirect |
@pixelfed I'm not criticizing this choice, but this makes me think about a pixelfed.ngo domain name?
