#Microsoft wants to move #Windows fully to the cloud.

theverge.com/2023/6/27/2377511

Don't let them force you to log on to their servers to monitor and control you every time you need your computer.

Take back your desktop! Use Plasma!

@kde No they don't, Verge ran a bad headline about Microsoft expanding cloud Windows streaming and then it turned into a game of telephone.

@corbin @kde I dunno, the details seem to be pretty solid in terms of internal goals and dreams, I don't think one can say Microsoft hasn't internally and even externally expressed this desire, and it's nothing new—they've been making such noises at least since Azure was announced, in part to appeal to investors by talking up cloud hype. But it's also true that Microsoft has a long, long tradition of promising the moon and barely reaching the treetops (see for example WinFS) so I wouldn't worry too much about it anytime too soon.

That being said I definitely run KDE both at work and at home, heh.

@corbin

Internal memo from MS:

"Move Windows 11 increasingly to the Cloud: 365 to enable a full Windows operating system streamed from the cloud to any device. Use the power of the cloud and client to enable improved Al-powered services and full roaming of people’s digital experience".

Corbin Davenport

@kde Right, they want a thin client version of Windows as an option for consumers instead of just enterprise customers. No one said "fully move" except Verge.

*The* Paul Brown

@corbin

No offense, but there is also no mention of "thin clients" or this whole strategy you attribute it to.

If you have more context, maybe more pages from that memo that gives more context, please share.

Corbin Davenport

@Bro666 Windows 365 already exists, it's just only for companies right now that need to sometimes run Windows software on non-Windows devices: microsoft.com/en-us/windows-36

"Move" is a weird word in that presentation slide, but that's getting into semantics. It's pretty clear they mean that cloud Windows should be an option for consumers, not that Windows will somehow only be a cloud thing.

*The* Paul Brown

@corbin

Here's the thing: all we know is what it says... Again, unless you have some internal insight and can back it up with evidence, that is.

Corbin Davenport

@Bro666 My evidence is reading comprehension. There is no feasible way to move millions or billions of PCs to a streaming solution for all computing tasks with the technology we have today, so the next likely explanation for poor wording in an internal document is that cloud streaming is an option for people who want it, which is a far lower amount of people.

*The* Paul Brown

@corbin

But it goes both ways, doesn't it? You inferred one thing. The author of the headline inferred something different.

Both of you are approaching this from different hypothetical contexts, as you lack the real one. Thus you reach different interpretations of what this memo means.

My point is you cannot say for sure the headline is wrong.

KDE

Plasma is a desktop environment that is easy to use, and protects your privacy. NASA, CERN, public institutions and companies worldwide rely on Plasma because of its features, stability and reliability.

You too can contribute to Plasma! Donate here:

KDE

Also the billions of unnecessary connections per second that an online Windows would require across all machines would increase harmful emissions to unacceptable levels.

Meanwhile, KDE is working to cut them back:

@kde Cool, gonna have to read that all later :Blobhaj:

@kde I see you claim "providing software which does this in a way that reduces software's environmental impact for us and future generations".

Can you back this assertion up? Does the e.V. have a consistent approach, and verifiable enforcement, of this goal across projects?

Kalzi

@kde it's always us the little guys who have to "save the environment". It's always us who picks up after rich people and big corporations.

Fabulous Fab's

@kde
I love #kde ! So much great #foss apps, and plasma is (imho) the best desktop environment experience ever !
I love it so much that I had to show the word that my body runs KDE, so I inked it into my skin !
Thanks for everything, keep up the good work ❤️.

@kde
and I love B'52 ! Sure how the Flintstones already used KDE Plasma ( left hand is Wilma?). 😀 However to stand a good B'52 Song you need rugged software . 😉 love shack for KDE 🤪

DELETED

@kde yes a really old version of plasma

Horzion

@kde I can't attest for reliability and stability anymore. It's gotten worse the last few months. I hope that this is to attribute to the work on Weyland support/integration, cause otherwise, I don't see a future for kde

KDE

@horzion

Plasma, like all large software projects is not bug free. But all bugs do not affect all people.

There are hardware, packaging, and configuration factors that may escape KDE's control. Indeed, your experience may be specific to you.

That said, you can do your part and dispel any doubts at the same time by reporting concrete, reproducible bugs to

We appreciate feedback and thank all users who take the time to help us locate and eliminate errors in the code.

@kde F'ing Windows. It's been years since I've had to give up anything to use Linux. Anything Windows can do, Linux can do better.

Christine Hall

@kde And my computer only needs to use the cloud when I want it to use the cloud.

Deus

Many saw this coming. Will stick to Windows 10 and will never upgrade it.

And…KDE Patrons: ‘The’ Google.

Mario

@kde@floss.social My non-techie family members use #debian with #plasma on their laptops and they're very happy with it. After I installed it and showed them how to use and update the system they never wanted to change back to windows.

A very Anarchist Owl

@kde But I like MATE + Openbox and whatever else I'm running here.. Y'all make it too easy, too stylish. If nature intended that GPUs would grow on trees 😆

Wohao_Gaster :fatyoshi:

@kde Can this be shown anywhere except people already following you?

Cysio :verified_gay:

@kde I feel like not many companies/people are gonna fall for it, they'll be left with that like with metaverse

Kumikäki with cheese

@kde Well, since you brought it up... I'd love to use KDE, but it's still too buggy. After 20 or so years of trying, it always ends with some show stopper bugs for me, last time (2022) it was window drawing (couldn't draw libreoffice windows), which I'd say is the main job of KDE.
I would completele prefer a working KDE to any other DE on Linux, but sadly it ain't so.

Arsimael Inshan

@kde You don't want to know what windows defender is capable of.
Or how Ms can annalize your company down to the social networks of your employees...

Leisure moon

@kde Hi KDE, Didnt they already do this with the roll out of Office 365. You need to be signed in to access your documents or even open a pdf

parrotcyder

@kde ysk about the kde connect air mouse. That thing is lit!

Jeramee

@kde

I live in SE Asia. The internet slows considerably from 4-9 everyday as people leave work/school & hop online. The infrastructure isn't ready here for that.

@kde

I spent days trying to turn off MS's bloatware on my last machine. Cortana, the AI assistant, cannot be uninstalled. You can, supposedly, turn it off, but it still runs in the background.

On the other hand, I'm very happy with my new machine running Linux. It's noticeably faster, does everything I want, and it doesn't spy on me.

the tower fairy

@kde Last time I tried using Plasma, I had to lose two days worth of work in order to wipe, format, and install GNOME (of all things). So apologies, I will stay with Microsoft, whatever harrowing that choice may be
