A request for help from Mastodon instance admins! Lemmy posts are no longer searchable from Mastodon and the Lemmy devs are looking for why.

"It would be good if an admin of a Mastodon or Hubzilla instance could check the server logs at the time of fetching a Lemmy object, and see what kind of error is being logged. There have been some changes to federation, but I cant think of anything that would cause this type of breakage." - @nutomic

Tagging some masto people here for help, sorry if this is an annoying ask (:

@liaizon Do you have a link of an example I can use? I'm able to search for and view posts on a couple from my mastodon without issues, logs all show 200s

monoxane

@liaizon I just get a plain 200 with no errors and no search results 🤔
`[5d834773488ed660bcc6f6899373cdbe] method=GET path=/api/v2/search format=html controller=Api::V2::SearchController action=index status=200 duration=773.79 view=1.55 db=3.77`

@mariusor @nutomic the thing that confuses me is that everything was working from the mastodon > lemmy < mastodon before the upgrade to 0.8

marius

@liaizon @nutomic I would suggest git bisect, but that seems a bit cumbersome to do for a production server. :)

@mariusor I am just trying to raise awareness for this issue since it is affecting everyone who is coming into the fediverse thru lemmy. and every guild that explains the fediverse says: just look up the post on mastodon to interact from there. but this is now broken

marius

@liaizon yeah, sorry, my comment was more for nutomic, if he's still involved with lemmy.ml. :)

Well maybe a test server can put up with some dummy comments and then some bisecting.

This isn’t a trivial problem. If the http ui can be kept without the federation changes, then some sort of roll back until the bug can be worked out would probably be necessary, especially if a wave is expected after 30 June.

@liaizon

Maybe get some of the people running both masto and Lemmy instances to help?

You’ve already at-ed Jerry. Maybe ruud of lemmy/mastodon.world?

Also Ada is running lemmy and calckey at blahaj zone.

Stux of mstdn and geddit.social

Ruud

@liaizon @maegul @stux I can maybe help but first I need to upgrade and troubleshoot some Lemmy issues

wakest ⁂

@ruud I would recommend not upgrading to 18 as it introduces a ton of new federation bugs with the rest of the fediverse

This may not be as wide a bug as stated.

My lemmy.ca account (and the two lemmy.ca communities that I follow via Mastodon) has still been federating, and they upgraded Lemmy to 0.18.0 a couple days back.

Searching for lemmy.ca also brings up other communities in my search box.

Posts I made there earlier this AM were visible instantly here.

@nutomic well @srgray, this issue isn't actually about federation persay, its about something changing with how webfinger is handled. if you want to test with your instance, try copying the link to an individual comment from the fediverse icon on lemmy and searching for it from mastodon. that used to work just great for every instance before 0.18 and no longer works for me and many others.

the admin of lemmy.ca has been trying to manually fix this issue so if it does work for you thats why

FWIW, I’ve tried searching comments from a few instances on either 18 or 17.4 and in each case, independently of how old the comment is, 17.4 comments were found quickly and never for 18, as you say.

@liaizon @nutomic

Now that I'm back at a computer, I can confirm that searching the link to a comment is indeed a bug for me.

Interesting that those same comments show up in my feed.

Hopefully you tech folk will figure it out swiftly!
