 An open and accessible way to distribute announcements should be the default: website, RSS, email newsletter. Anything else is a bonus on top. And it doesn’t matter that much if you have a dedicated domain or if your page is part of a latger website. The important thing is that it can be accessed with a web browser and linked to. (This appies to organizing that is supposed to be openly visible. If you’re doing covert action or organizing, very different strategies apply) 19 comments

It may not be pretty, or check all the boxes us technical types value, but it will be _functional_ and that’s what’s important.  That sounds like heaven to me. One of my original gripes with FB is simply how butt-ugly it is to look at.  @esther I think organisations take a risk by relying on a friendly nerd managing their web presence. What if that nerd starts a family, gets a more demanding job, or just decides that they don't want to do free labour for that specific organisation anymore? Not advocating to use facebook, but there should be better options for organisations to own their own webpresence @peter @esther Yes, I think even an account on a Mastodon instance run by a reputable organization (something like Mozilla) would be preferable, especially since that would automatically generate an RSS feed as well. Furthermore, such an account would be much easier to set up and maintain than a website including a self-hosted feed, especially if much of the information needs to be available only for a short period of time.  @esther Uh oh... the thing with the domains... it's like you're speaking directly to my soul. :D  @esther I used to work at a registrar, and the boss let us register as many domains as we liked as long as it wasn’t a squatting thing. I’m not gonna lie, the occasional intervention was required when it got out of hand. (like registering domains that referenced other domains registered by a co-worker, for example).  🤣 nonononono! Completely wrong! I’ve only got like a dozen. (Cancelled a few the other day) Plus I now do use this one 😊 |

Heck, if you’re an organizer and don’t have the means to put up a website yourself, get in touch with some nerd. They’ll probably gladly put up a simple page on one of their 27 domains that they bought for giggles and never really use.
(Yes, I’m one of those nerds. Even though I have the domain buying habit a bit more under control 😅)
