I am feeling very “Doctor Manhattan sitting on the moon” about this moment of watching this generation of the social web die due to fascist tech tycoon brain wanting control so badly that they’ll kill their own platforms. These people.

@anildash That's maybe the only superpower I'd really want to possess in real life: to be able to *actually* get off this world when I want out... @anildash Unfortunately switching platforms is too big of a pain for many less (tech) savvy folks, so they’ll stick to these platforms as they turn into pure misinformation platforms. The platform owners may lose money, but they will gain influence. @anildash Largely agree, but worth remembering the role of "investors" strategically extracting as much value as they can and then leaving behind the withered husk of previously viable companies. Like Toys R Us. They still exist in Canada, I suspect because we have slightly stricter regulations that prevented private equity from destroying the company for short term gains here. We don’t live in a market economy so much, it’s wealth simply pillaging real companies for even more money. Bed Bath and Beyond, Norfolk rail, Sears, etc and most of Musk’s efforts are pillage and pillage of tax payers by subsidy. Mean while we have cartels like Cargill, Tyson or monopolies like LiveNation or TicketMaster. Where markets are destroyed or largely maimed. Capitalism? Not even @GhostOnTheHalfShell @TonyaCanning @anildash Some would argue these are inevitable outcomes of capitalism, not aberrations. Marx warned of wealth accumulation and consolidation almost 200 years ago now, let's not act like nobody saw that coming. @anildash Understood, but you can also see it from the ground, looking up, at the 1% revealing exactly who they are what that truth entails. They already own most of media. Beyond Fox, there is Sinclair broadcasting plus FB / the Tube which promote rw content the most for outlets like DailyWire. We live in a situation that rhymes with a century ago, but in many ways our situation is unique because the take over is a project run over 50 years. It has been a stealth coup of sorts. It is already institutionalized. DeSantis made a stab at a police force loyal to him IIRC @GhostOnTheHalfShell @anildash You're right that we're already seeing it. The old money controls the traditional media, traditional military, and traditional banks. The new money is about the social media, crypto, and probably mixture of pmc and palantir, and probably palmer luckey's company. I believe there's a good probability that next year, Reddit will become the perfect place for election disinformation. Twitter already is, Meta probably wants to be in round 2. Peter “technology is an alternative to politics” Thiel It’s hard to describe just how centrifugal both old and younger billionaires are. The older ones are RW libertarians and the younger lean an-cap. Both are perfectly happy to lie to get their ways and they have the money to do it. @GhostOnTheHalfShell @anildash they all are the same, as soon as there's a news that they will be taxed, all the sudden those liberal techbros either go straight up double irish dutch sandwich or start bankrolling fascists under the promise of hefty tax breaks. @GhostOnTheHalfShell@masto.ai @sub_o@mastodon.social @anildash@me.dm @barrylyga @anildash nothing elicits a response faster than someone getting culture references incorrect 😎 @anildash@me.dm i can't figure out why all y'all fake leftists feel so powerless. have you tried binary voting? @anildash Dr Manhattan is one of the more interesting characters in modern media. What would happen to someone if they obtained really exceptional powers. How would you even relate to anyone else at that point? Alan Moore is one hell of an interesting guy to say the least. @anildash in the end this is for the best.. moving control of these away from megalomaniacs with brain rot will be better for everyone long term. It will just be a slow process. |
@anildash wasnt he sitting on mars, or did he migrated there later? im not sure
