Re-learned the clove hitch (or webeleinstek in German), an ancient and simple knot to secure a piece of rope using two hitches. We used it aboard to secure the fenders to the railings.

This and the bowline are the two knots were burned into my memory in boyscouts growing up. Over the years I have relearned other knots I learned and forgot and just plain forgotten many others... but the clovehitch and bowline are so beautiful and useful that they just refuse to be forgotten in my head. Though.... I can really only tie a bowline with the one handed method with the loop around your body (I think this was a sailor's OG form of a life preserver?). |
@rostiger A very useful variant is to put the loose part of the rope "auf Slip" by going back. This allows to open the knot easily and fast with one hand.
