This scientist’s posts got more proportional engagement on Mastodon than anywhere else. - TheVerge

I mean, it’s amazing what happens when all the abusers and haters are busy having a Nazi circle jerk over on the birdshit site, and the kind, helpful, smart folks are here. And authenticity is key — as in, being a living breathing human and not just a paid troll — that’s helpful too. :mastodon: :mw: ✊

@ohiorob Exactly! In the end, that prob all that counts 😉

Who cares about a million gazzilion "likes" when no one actually reads and engages with it :blobcatgiggle:

@ohiorob @stux I am hopeful that the lack of algorithms, the lack of an influencer centric model, and the ease of blocking instances will keep mastodon friendly, safe, and nazi circle jerk free. Or at least they can do it on their own completely isolated instance. Of course, that could lead to a radicalizing echo chamber, but those already exist anyway…

Exactly. I see #mastodon as an exercise in democratization of social media, as much as being a Twitter alternative. I only wish I had learned about it sooner.

@ohiorob @stux let it be known that ever since I migrated from the birdsite, I've never felt safer on any other social media platform than I do here. Sprinkle the right amount of science unto my safety and as a woman it means to me more than winning the lottery.
Women and #WomeninScience, just want to be safe and heard. Thank you, FediFam!

@Astro_Jmona @ohiorob @stux I feel the same way; not to equate being an autistic online to being the same as what women online have to go through, but this is the first social media place I have ever felt safe, too. I also love how many scientists are on here!

@exsangus @ohiorob @stux I hear you. Know you’re not alone. There is a support system for you and me here, something I never thought I’d find.
I’m neurodivergent as well, though most of the time I don't say much bc my brain says everything I say is wrong, I feel like I can interact with others without fear of judgment. I may be nowhere close to copacetic, but here I've found my own voice and that of others kindly reminding me that it's okay to not be okay. Glad you’re here.😊

@Astro_Jmona @ohiorob I am super happy about that! ❤️ :blobcathearts:
