@d6 i have this ancient netbook from 2006 with 32bit intel atom something and 1gb of ram, i love tinkering with it and trying to get it working for modern work when my next game is done im gonna try compiling it on that thing, it'll probably melt but it should be fun I have a similar age netbook running current Debian stable (i386 build) and my own custom lightweight X session I ripped out the antennas and use it for journaling and stuff I want private It's very gratifying @neauoire "we're getting reports that someone is playing snood on ten year old microwave" @AlgoCompSynth i meant "trash" figuratively (but i have actually found multiple computers left out on the curb with the trash) @d6 I live in an apartment complex - people leave *furniture* by the bins but I've never seen anything that could run Forth. 😉 @AlgoCompSynth @d6 I threw out a G5 iMac with a broken motherboard once. It almost certainly still had useful parts in it (particularly the superdrive) but I couldn't find anyone who wanted it. I left it by a dumpster while clearing a lot of other things, and a few minutes later when I went back with more things, it was already gone. @d6 IDDC: International Dumpster Diver Conference. It has a nice ring to it. @d6 The laptop I use to write this message was bought before 2012, it was supposed to end up in the trash after a few years so I was given it for free. Today it is still running smoothly because I use Peppermint Os, a #linux distro that runs for old laptops. The keyboard has some missing parts so I had to attach to it another keyboard that was not used. This is why I use Linux, it allows me to run very old devices and yet be on the coolest social media. @d6 Reminds me that I so wish trash here would be an actual public service where you could also just take things that interests you.
@d6 #Funfact: Before the local recyclers got cameras, I literally knew people that did #DumpsterDive - #PC #Builds that would put #BudgetBuilds, #LowSpecGamer & #ScrapyardWars to shame... @jgarber I think Savannah would be a wonderful host city for Trashup Camp. It’s both trashy and campy - and we have good BBQ, and liberal open container laws. @d6 We need a duct tapers conference where IT professionals give lectures on how to deal with all the bugs. @d6 I would go, and present.
I am currently compiling Emacs on an eeePC that was "free to a good home". @d6 Good that the opposite already exists somewhere in the world: people give excited presentations about trash software running on otherwise useful computers. @d6 to go full on it although should have a buffet with saved food from the surrounding shops. @d6 The thing is that is as to be cheap because sponsoring will be hard to find. Basucally a field where one could pitch a tent and a few facilities. @d6 this post gives me a newfound borderline horrifying desire to program perfectly relevant and useful software/hardware/&c for Windows 9x @d6 follow @trashrobot for more on this exact subject, he has a whole book / self replicating wiki / hardware setup to proselytize @d6 For about 2/3 of my PhD work, the computer I used at home was what I called "my zero-cost computer". It was a frankenputer from various discarded bits. Before it was finished, I gave in and paid $25 for a CD drive because while I *could* load Slackware from floppies, it seemed easier to load RedHat from a CD. Later, I also paid for a Cyrix 5x86 to upgrade the processor. I replaced it when a bearing in the hard drive went, and the read/write head left a nice gouge in one of the platters. |
@d6 Seems legit. :-)
