If you were going to start a photo blog on the Fediverse, which software would you use?

(and I’d love to hear why in the replies…)

@peterbutler I'ved had all 3, and 1) pixelfed had moderation issues (my photos were unlisted even though they was no reason to be) and the mobile app is really out yet
2) Calckey is most fun, but mobile app is not available on ios yet
3 Mastodon has been the most reliable/good mobile app to upload!

@peterbutler A difficult choice in the near future if tumblr adopts the same protocol and Barcelona is in the preliminary stages.

@peterbutler@mas.to Pixelfed is great, especially with the portfolio feature.

@peterbutler I don’t think of any of those as blog hosting - they are more like community message boards - a blog is longer form and the viewer gets best experience by visiting your homepage/blog stream. Comments are visible and links to other info sources are immediately available. Now if you are looking for a place to simply post a daily upload with searchable tags and maybe a link to a sale site, then any of the above would work, choice depends on your target market/image style.

@peterbutler since I already have a #WordPress site working on the #Fediverse I'd probably go that route. A close second would be standing up my own #Pixelfed instance, but that would require more maintenance overhead for me I think.

@tim @peterbutler Good point! Which has better usability? My WP feels like so much bloatware. Is #pixelfed easier?

Tim Nolte

@ChrisBoese @peterbutler for me I want to fully keep my content in my control, so my own #Pixelfed instance is going to be harder just for the added maintenance of keeping the software and system up-to-date. Another #WordPress site would be cake. From a normal day-to-day usability standpoint Pixelfed is might be easier because that's what it's designed for without tweaking, unlike a WordPress site.

@tim @peterbutler even keeping WP up to date is a challenge. Got a better host now, so I don’t have to muck about with code and updates so much. Sometimes I look longingly at Hugo,

@peterbutler I would go with @pixelfed probably, I prefer to use platforms that were “designed to task”.

@peterbutler just because the most people I follow use it and say it's ok.
