it’s fun to horrify non-americans with bits of life here. like biscuit cans that explode when you press a spoon to them, classroom emergency buckets, still being able to rattle off the pledge of allegiance since it’s seared into our brains from age 5,

D. Griffin Jones, idk what it is but if it is how I imagine it, it must be hella convenient to spray a perfectly-shaped slice of cheese onto your sandwich

@grishka @dgriffinjones We will not stop until every part of a sandwich is canned and sprayable. I demand spray bread. The people crave spray roast beef. This is what our founding fathers died for.

@samhenrigold I was veal confused because why would cookies come in a can, but we actually have this too but for bake at home croissants

@samhenrigold I am from the US, what on God's green earth are "classroom emergency buckets"

My own wtf observations from visiting the US mostly relate to money and include the tips, the prices that don't include the sales tax, and the credit card readers that still only use the magnetic stripe and sometimes no authentication whatsoever. On the first day of my first visit in 2014 (in NYC, btw) I had to google what the fuck "one dime" was.

Григорий, also people predominantly getting their phones through carriers and paying them off over a year or two. But that's probably not that unique to the US.

@grishka We’re in a transitional phase there. Some people buy them outright but sneaky, tons-of-fine-print carrier deals are making a comeback. Just last week dad asked me about this promo Verizon emailed him about a free iPhone 14 Plus and it turns out it’s over 36 months + a trade in.

I think some people are just so jaded after years of that type of BS that they’re now only buying outright to limit the amount of carrier nonsense in their lives.

@grishka Payment readers have gotten a *little* better since then, mostly due to the move to mobile payments. Those iPad Square PoS things are super popular, along with the Verifone Android-based readers. They still offer tip amounts (and they’re getting pretty crazy — 25% in some stores) based on post-tax 🥴
