I think you're missing the point, but if not honoring nature is a wonderful thing.

If you dig into the etymological roots of “deity”, it looks like it can be traced back to the same word that got us “day”. In other words, our generic word for a god dates back to worshipping the sky as a god. So, yes, the line between worshiping the sun as a concrete thing and as an anthropomorphized abstract is a blurry one. I like basking in the sun nearly as much as a lizard does, but that doesn’t equate to worship. Worship is a really bad idea. It involves personifying natural (or, worse, supernatural) things that are not people. Worship is dumb. Honestly... I reviewed the word worship, and by strict definition, he's right in that the meaning is tied to god(s) or deity. The problem, though, is that I think the meaning is not necessarily that strict now. Calling things, real or not god(s), is a dualistic construct whereby one relies more on a lack of understanding or faith rather than the metaphorical storytelling it is. Look, if you want to say that you have positive feelings towards nature or whatever, I’ve got no problem with that. In fact, I share some of these feelings. Where I draw the line is at worship, which requires us to personify non-persons, and to raise them above us. I don’t worship anyone or anything, no matter how positive my feelings towards them are. Sorry, not sorry. And nature contains minds but doesn’t have one, so it’s not capable of caring about us. It’s not hostile, it’s not friendly; it’s apathetic. @bhawthorne @TruthSandwich You raise interesting points, but I think on it all depends on how strict you want to define the word worship, as I've said. @lednabm @TruthSandwich Can we mutually agree on a definition? I proposed Merriam-Webster’s (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/worship), which seems to adequately reflect the two main senses that I have seen the word used over the past 60 years, both in written and verbal communication. @TruthSandwich @lednabm “Excessive” is such a lovely value-laden term. @TruthSandwich @lednabm I would argue that the sun is a far better thing to worship than the example given by Merriam-Webster (“a celebrity worshipped by her fans”) but that is because I utterly reject the cult of celebrity in our society. I’m not saying it is “dumb” but it sure seems more worthy of that moniker than worshipping the major source of all energy on earth. @TruthSandwich @lednabm worship also creates a master/slave dynamic which can be normative to other master/slave relationships. @TruthSandwich @lednabm it's a joke, and it's really funny. Don't analyze memes just laugh at them. @Jennifer_Pinkley @TruthSandwich @lednabm |

I get the point: worshipping the sun is less ridiculous than worshipping something that doesn’t even exist.
My point: worship is bad. The sun is a hot ball of fusing gas. It is mindless and uncaring. Worshipping it is, well, dumb.
That’s because worship is dumb.
