@Mastodon For people who are afraid that quoted posts wouldn't be something you can't opt-out of, @Gargron said in this post (mastodon.social/@Gargron/10962) that "If we did do it we'd like to make it something you can opt out of …".

Although I personally prefer opt-in, I think this is also fine, especially considering new users wouldn't find this opt-in toggle so easily in the settings (except when asked during onboarding - what I don't think will happen).

Opt-out means there are two user options to implement:

1. Opt-out default for all posts (under Posting defaults)
2. Opt-out for single posts (below the compose window)

Actually these are the same options as the 'Posting privacy', that you can also set as a posting default or only for single posts.

❗ Another important thing to consider is an option for server administrators to reverse the opt-out. This is especially important for existing communities, who want to keep the old behaviour, but still give their users the option to opt-in.

Opt Out is unacceptable, as it completely changes someone's exposure to abuse.

The change has to be Opt In, it has to be per post, and the option has to be revocable, to prevent abusers pile ons.

@dgold I'm not going to start this discussion again. Opt-out is already better than that social network we want to forget. But having the option for server admins to make it opt-in is something I prefer, comparable with how search-engine indexing can be changed to opt-in on server level. I really hope that @Gargron gives us, long time Mastodon users, this option. Than (mostly) everyone can be satisfied and we can move on.
