Bluesky's terms of use state: "We may terminate or suspend, in whole or in part, your access to and use of the Services, including suspending access to or terminating your ACCOUNT".

This is a very odd policy for a company that trumpets nomadic identity as its killer feature.

I mean, that's the whole reason why Bluesky built a whole new protocol instead of using ActivityPub, right?

If Bluesky can suspend your account without notice, what's the point?

The Whatever We Feel Like clause...has a musky scent to it.

Codesmith

@atomicpoet @fediversenews There are lots of goodies in that TOS like how they can use cookies to track you all over the internets to improve the ads they're going to show you. Somehow feeling very like conventional social media...

hammancheez

@codesmith @atomicpoet @fediversenews yeah this all reads like Facebook 1.0 do they have any GDPR language

Codesmith

@hammancheez @atomicpoet @fediversenews I'm no lawyer but I'd expect potentially not allowing you to delete your account would be considered a violation of GDPR.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews if I got banned from bluesky, I would simply go to another instance

This is pretty much everybody’s TOS.

Pretty sure most Masto servers can do the same.

@LizardSF @atomicpoet @fediversenews I don't think the point was that this is a bad policy for anyone to have. But BlueSky specifically says it's better than ActivityPub because it's easier to move your account to other servers. And that's just... not true. In part because of the policy above.
It's not that the policy itself is terrible, it's just hypocritical considering their main selling point

@Lizard @Chris Trottier This sounds more like Eugen Rochko having the right and the power to ban you from all of Mastodon on a whim without telling you why.

And unlike the Fediverse, Bluesky won't let you go elsewhere because there's only this one project that uses the AT protocol. And I'm not sure how kindly they'd take Friendica hypothetically adding AT/Bluesky federation.
Kevin Davidson

@atomicpoet @fediversenews I spent last night reading all the protocol documentation and so I can tell you this is fine. Your posts are all held in your Personal Data Store, and your client has a backup of it. You just connect to another ATP server and carry on. Problem solved.
Or, just as soon as there’s a second server to connect to. Any day now. Probably.

@atomicpoet Where can I find the most recent data on signups/usage of Mastodon since last fall? I keep seeing references to "slumps" in numbers but I thought it was still growing overall. @fediversenews

notthatkaren

@dangillmor @atomicpoet @fediversenews I follow @mastodonusercount. It’s a bot and don’t know if it’s what you are looking for….but I find it interesting.

Chris Trottier

@dangillmor I use a variety of sources: @mastodonusercount, fediverse.observer, the-federation.info, and beta.fedidb.org

Short answer: there's no slump.

Sign-ups continue to increase -- albeit, not at the same rate as in November -- November was a spike.

While MAUs decreased since November, it's increased again this month (according to @Gargron).

But what's more interesting is that HYAUs is at a peak.

And we're very close to breaking 1 billion posts per month!

See chart.

Chris Trottier

@dangillmor But this chart for Misskey is even more interesting to me. This is
Average Misskey Total Users by Month.

The growth is absurd -- and it has been validated by multiple sources.

Misskey is part of the Fediverse, and it talks to Mastodon.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews If possible, then that's not a decentralised protocol. I don't get why people think Jack deserves their trust.

Kind of weird if you can bring your own domain name though 🤷‍♂️

These people really seem to be flying by the seat of their pants
monbrielle

@atomicpoet @fediversenews if fact you are twisting the TOS. In order for them to operate, they need to be able to promote the app. That means, they will take screenshots of Bluesky, which will include users’ content. That said, they have explicitly told us community that if we are using our content in a way we disapprove of, please we can email them

Codesmith

@monbrielle @atomicpoet @fediversenews Surely they could use sample data for screenshots to promote the app. "We're going to get the rights to ALL of your content and promise (but not in the TOS) we'll only EVER use it for this one specific purpose. Trust me bro." does not do it for me.

monbrielle

@codesmith @atomicpoet @fediversenews just say that you dislike bluesky and be done ^^ we can shitpost there the whole time without feeling left out like we do here

Chris Trottier

@monbrielle @fediversenews This has nothing to do with screenshots. It has everything to do with Bluesky having one node, and writing into the TOS that they may suspend accounts without notice.

Well, when is Bluesky planning to actually decentralize?

stib

@monbrielle
Sure, they put that in the TOS because no one in their marketing dept could be bothered making a mock-up of the UI. Sure.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews lol good find! Where is my charlie brown and lucy with the football gif?
meadowhawk

@atomicpoet @fediversenews seems the only way they can 'terminate' a users account is if they control all instances of the service..which of course means it's not decentralized... 🤔 Wonder which way that will go?

JohnW

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Yeah this is something I saw coming. I am not the least bit surprised. Freedom of speech wrapped in the Emperors new clothes.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews this is like literally what every service ever does

Chris Trottier

@vision This is not what a FEDERATED service with NOMADIC identity does.

eshep
@atomicpoet Want yer account to never be terminated? Run yer own instance! People could still block you or your instance, but you're account will still be intact.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews How does this technically work with "decentralized" network...???
