Hi fediverse, we recently held a vote on whether to post in English or German. Most of you wanted us to post in English, but lots asked for both via the comments. We'll try to do this within each toot (whenever there is enough space)!

Let us know your thoughts!

@Tutanota Sounds like a nice alternative. Win-win. ๐Ÿ‘ Should we reply in the same way?

@Tutanota Now the post with which text is no longer a barrier, my personal view, you use English, German can be. I will continue to support you!

@Tutanota For #fediverse software and apps with #language filters, I suggest you do not mix languages in one post as it will more likely be filtered out.

Also, since you are in a #Mastodon instance, it has a โ€œposting languageโ€ feature. If you post in English, select โ€œenโ€, if you post in German, select โ€œdeโ€. Which also helps in filtering posts if it is supported by your follower's fediverse platform or app.

Of course, it's all up to you, whichever posting strategy you choose. I think it's safe to assume that there is a very low number of users who filtered out English, if any. ^_^

@youronlyone Tried that, but people complained they did not want to see German posts. (maybe they did not set up the filter on their end)?

@Tutanota Yep, more likely they haven't explored that feature. Or, they are using a fediverse software and/or app that doesn't have language filters; or doesn't use their account's language filter settings.

In any case, it's going to be a challenge. For one, you're in the mastodon.social instance which is limited to 500 characters. If multiple languages in one post will be your chosen strategy, you may have to transfer to a different instance with 1,000 or even 2,000-character limit.

Or, maybe just post in English, since your reach and market is global.

Another option is, keep separate accounts. You can take advantage of mastodon.social's twin server, mastodon.online. ;)

@Tutanota Ideally you will have one account per language, as mentioned on replies it helps when filtering posts :cdrr:

@Tutanota English speaker here who is very glad you chose both! Native language media matters to communities.
