Thank goodness for Nilay Patel exposing the feckless, spineless, accessory to racism and other noxious speech that Substack is. Nilay gave Best multiple opportunities to say the right thing. He would not. tiktok.com/t/ZTR3mLGp2/

@jeffjarvis I am speechless. Not at all surprised to find out that another white CEO is racist. But speechless that someone could be that utterly clueless about how that interview was going to make him look. Either that, or he actually wanted everyone to know that he fully intends to allow overt racism. Which says to me that he values free speech racists more than he values people of color or anti-racist white people.

Thank you for sharing. I couldn't put my finger on why I didn't want to follow some folks out of my inbox and onto Substack. Not naming folks, because that's tangential and I unsubbed from their pay-to-read newsletter for other reasons (the major one was I wasn't actually reading them anymore).

@jeffjarvis Haven’t seen/heard it, but from the comments it doesn’t sound good.

@jeffjarvis when people tell you who they are, believe them.

@jeffjarvis Transcript, for those who don't want to go through another platform with a terrible moderation and privacy record:

@csepp Thanks for transcript link. It shows rest of the conversation after the awkward, pregnant pause that generated comments on that TikTok. I wouldn't say the video takes that part of the conversation out of context as CEO Chris Best's reaction does indicate a future troubling situation with Substack Notes. However, that clip does sensationalize the situation. Does it rise to the level of "moral panic"? @jeffjarvis I don't know, but it does make me think more about using Substack or not.

@jeffjarvis thanks for sharing. This short clip hits the spot in so many ways. It’s also a great demonstration of the power of well timed silences.

@jeffjarvis Proving once again that purveyors of walled gardens don’t have our best interests at heart.
