@jxce @pixelfed I'm happy to answer simple questions. I'm not happy to provide long drawn out tutorials that ultimately waste my time. This fellow wasn't just happy that I answered his question, he privately messaged me to thank me about urging him to try @pixelfed. Again, learning by doing is better than learning by reading and not doing. @atomicpoet @pixelfed I definitely learn a lot more by doing as well, though being pointed in the right direction is always a huge help. I generally don't need things spelled out to me, but if I'm presented with a topic that can be really overwhelming, knowing where a reputable doc is makes that much less intimidating. I realize that what a whole lot of people need is an ask. You can't just assume they will try something. You have to ask them. It's as though asking them gives them an incentive to do it. This isn't a bad thing, by the way -- just human behaviour. Someone asked me to do something today, and I did it because they asked. If not for the ask, I wouldn't have done it. @atomicpoet Iâm very concerned about bothering people, so I wonât go someplace or join in a group unless Iâm explicitly invited. Someone said, âMaybe you should explain why I should be interested in Pixelfed.â But that could be a time suck. So meet me halfway and tell me how likely you are to try Pixelfed if I explain it to you. @atomicpoet @ch0ccyra1n Cool. Well, you should try @pixelfed because itâs the easiest, most enjoyable way to appreciate art on the Fediverse. And itâs great for image sharing, to boot! @atomicpoet better question is why use the app. The web version is excellent. @atomicpoet still, I see these mobile apps and don't understand why I should bother Sometimes I get people who think theyâre better than @pixelfed because they prefer text posting to image posting. But thatâs like arguing that youâre better because you read newspapers instead of visit art galleries. @atomicpoet @pixelfed I think this just answered my core question - pixelfed is image focussed vs mastodons primary text focus - so it would be a way to separate my primarily picture focussed feed from my primarily discussion feeds @atomicpoet @pixelfed Is there an (android) app that has an option to have different Fedi accounts display according to the fediverse server it's on? It'd make cross-account favoriting and boosting easier. I'm interested in Pixelfed, but I have to admit I don't really understand it. Specifically, why does it need to be a whole separate service as opposed to, say, a Madoston client that specializes in photo sharing? Or just a separate section of an existing Mastodon client that specializes in photo sharing (like a 'stories' kind of thing)? I feel intimadated by the idea of essentially joining a Mastodon-but-its-only-photos and rebuilding a whole new social graph just for that. What am I missing? @atomicpoet I was curious about Pixelfed, got a spot and then you helped me to get the app which improved the experience. I've really enjoyed both Mastodon and Pixelfed, they're both nice. Thanks. @atomicpoet I wasnât aware of the fediverse until recently, even though I started my Mastodon account in 2018. Only heard about it a few months ago. I already forgot what other possibilities there are, like pixelfed. Can you share a bit about that? @heleenkuiper This Wiki article will help you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse @atomicpoet @pixelfed The catch being *why* try it? What does pixelfed do that I canât do on Mastodon? Or consume from mastodon? Perhaps itâs not the best example from my perspective - I donât quite âgetâ instagram either but I am feeling somewhat dense with this. I think I can understand why lemmy or friendica as theyâre organized around discussions/groups (I think) but with all inter operating whatâs the macro differences other than interface? @atomicpoet @pixelfed 100% - already trying it at pixelfed.de - and I donât see a lot of distinction (but lots of nice photos) |
