#NPR will no longer post fresh content to its 52 official #Twitter feeds after being labeled by Elon Musk as “state-affiliated” and then “government-funded media.” npr.org/2023/04/12/1169269161/

Twitter is in its walking ghost phase after receiving a deadly dose of Musk radiation
@jeff @w7voa

Norman

@w7voa they should make a Mastodon instances to host their feeds

Stroad Warrior

@pygmalion55 @w7voa Or RSS (which they probably already have, actually.) Same ability to reach people, no annoying comments or flame wars.

Norman

@jdeisenberg
@w7voa @NPR @nprpolitics those seem to be bots repeating the Twitter feeds...which aren't going to work anymore.

Norman

@jdeisenberg
@w7voa @NPR @nprpolitics no problem.

I follow a bunch of newsbot feeds. But they need something to automatically repost.

Anyway this wod be a golden opportunity for a big name to make an official news instance for their own content.

Baloo Uriza

@pygmalion55 press.coop really should just be blocked wholesale since the whole instance is a read-only twitter mirror.

@jdeisenberg @w7voa

@pygmalion55 @jdeisenberg @w7voa @NPR @nprpolitics

Hopefully those accounts are going to be wetware soon, seeing as they already have the followers here.

@pygmalion55 @w7voa Send them an email and suggest it while mentioning you fav NPR show or reporter/host

Hughster

@w7voa Excellent. Presumably the BBC will be showing it has the same integrity by following suit?

Jerry Lerman

@w7voa Nice! At least one media outlet has some self-respect and understanding of why Twitter is no longer a place for journalists (or other reputable businesses) and is sending the message.

I wish the NY Times would start showing some spine and fight as well.

Maybe with NPR doing this, other outlets will rethink their role on Twitter?

Gorba

@rogue_corq @w7voa Send NPR an email suggesting it, mention your local station and an npr show

@w7voa

NPR is at least cluefull enough to realize that their listeners are savvy enough to find them on other, less corrupted platform.

Organizations that attempt to appeal to broader ("less sophisticated")audiences probably don't feel they have that option.

@w7voa

It is inconceivable that Musk stepped into the management role at Twitter crowing about "free speech" and vowing to keep Twitter oversight to a minimum; and in a matter of months he has turned the site into his personal troll factory.

Baloo Uriza

@GregCirillo Inconceivable that the guy who is on record as buying it to destroy it, is following through on that word? Next you're gonna tell me it's inconceivable that the Democrats are a solidly conservative party and Republicans are outright fascist...

@w7voa I am amazed that organizations are only leaving Twitter in response to personal attacks, rather than because of the myriad other issues that make it a problematic forum to be associated with.

Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe

@jonahbk @w7voa Too many news orgs look at their web traffic and believe that readers find their stories through Twitter, like it's some kind of RSS on steroids. But at this point, news orgs need to be truly skeptical of the value of those data points. We've all been at this long enough to know that social media referrals aren't driving subscriptions. They just aren't

Gorba

@jonahbk @w7voa I’m not organizations have been indoctrinated that their purpose is “self interest” and if they hold true to that the public interest will be servered, which is b.s. of course.

Algernon D'Ammassa

@w7voa Needs to be a trend. Depending so much on one website (after #journalists helped make it so “indispensable”) was always an ethical problem; and now, so is staying.

Sara

@algernon @w7voa I sent the public editor one of those "as a longtime listener and supporter I'm glad you're doing this" notes this morning

Ken Brucker

@w7voa We need orgs like NPR and government sites to create their own mastodon instances as a way us to verify who they are and control an aspect of how they are represented. Great to see NPR stepping away from Twitter.

Gorba

@sigsegv @w7voa send them an email suggesting it, mention your favorite NPR show or reporter

kaifilion

@w7voa
Hey @kairyssdal
Can you help bring #NPR and/or #apm folks over here?

Bianca

@w7voa We need quote pots here to improve this platform.

@w7voa TOO MANY ALT ACCOUNTS NPR, BE YOURSELF

Athena's Owl

@w7voa When will twitter start tagging senators Romney, Burr, Cruz, Tillis, Rubio with "NRA Affiliated Garbage", similar to what you did with BBC and NPR for much less. ...still waiting ...

@w7voa It looks like this might be an official NPR account here. @NPR

@w7voa

Let all of our voices be heard and let NPR know they are more than welcome here on Mastodon.

I just sent my e-mail. How about you?

@w7voa Good for NPR, hopefully other organizations will follow suit. I would much rather see my (meager) NPR contribution going to support an NPR-owned fediverse instance than to a privately owned social media site / dumpster fire.
