This is the future of Big Social.

People auto-generating comments in order to make it look like they give a damn about you, while the other guy on the other end does the same -- with both folks convinced they are somehow "influencers".

Oh no! Wouldn't want to actually talk to each other as human beings! That would be awful!

@atomicpoet And here I thought I couldn’t hate IG any more.

Big Social attracts a lot of con artists trying to con other con artists with the conceit that there’s always a bigger fool than themselves.

@atomicpoet yeah sadly. I was monitoring a forum that sells fake / sock accounts.

And they are sadly like that, fake engagements, stolen photos on instagram being reposted, fake follows and likes.

There's a reason why all the sudden you see the AI hype. I'm pretty sure we're already seeing IG accounts with AI generated photos, captions, and comments, which are eventually sold for crypto scammers and election disinformation accounts.

@atomicpoet yeah. The whole "social media influencer" thing is a giant pyramid scheme built on utter shite (to mix metaphors)

@atomicpoet Twitter's Discover/For You page is so full of 'gurus' posting mundane engagement--bait tips, I had to leave.

Madeleine Morris

@atomicpoet That would be generous and interested in others.

@atomicpoet "That comment was so sweet. Thank you!"

"Umm....what did I say?"

No thanks.

@atomicpoet and so the ai nightmare truly begins... auto-generated ai engagement will become the text graffiti of the internet.

@atomicpoet The next step is to integrate this functionality into the various social media apps. It's coming. Twitter will become just bots talking to each other on behalf of people and I suspect Facebook will eventually do the same.

@atomicpoet I love the scene in Real Genius when the kids just drop off tape recorders to their class, and eventually the professor just puts a tape recorder in his place playing his lesson. Nobody is there, just machines playing and recording. LOL. It feels very similar to that. :)

@atomicpoet

We need to use technology to help us build shared understanding, and profound knowledge.

Generating unique comments is like anti-shared understanding. If a comment is only superficially different it adds nothing profound, and is essentially a duplicate of something said before, just well disguised.

I would rather a system said "We've seen that comment before here. Have a look what everyone said in response" and see where that takes us.

@atomicpoet
Don't they realize they are actually devaluing their products?

WordPress has had this 'feature' for years.
Just set up a new self-hosted #WordPress install, leave the default settings in place, and watch your site fill up with automated comment spam. Most of it is variants of "hey, great blog!"

@atomicpoet My AI loves me more than your AI loves you!

Wait, are you an AI?
