Also noticing that although #Fediforum was about the #Fediverse, and all the people there understand @foo@bar.com handles, so many session notes written by a variety of people have foo@bar.com instead of @foo@bar.com.

So if the early adopters/experts have difficulty with this syntax, do we have any hope that the general public will be able to differentiate fediverse handles and #email addresses, and use them consistently?

I think they simply have to become the same over time.

@J12t I don't think I want to be the only user on my fediverse instance, as I am on my personal email domain.

Johannes Ernst

@jamesmarshall You could point your webfinger file to your real Fediverse instance, like @snarfed.org does with #webfinger and fed.brid.gy/

@J12t For them to become the same, email providers (I am assuming it is that that will be doing the double duty) must make their Ids webfingerable and allow the user/Fedi provider to populate the associated JSON doc.

SIP URI has the same issue. Just a pedantic point: the leading "@" is just a UI convention in Fediverse and is not part of acct URI.

@J12t I find the @foo@bar.com syntax annoying and ignore it whenever I think I can get away with it.

@J12t No leading "@". It is not self-explanatory.

Johannes Ernst

@lucasgonze Personally I believe @foo@bar.com, foo@bar.com, and bar.com/~foo should all lead to the same thing.

@J12t The antipattern is inventing a scheme in order to flag the type, like mastodon:foo@bar.com

The dyspattern is a well-known server, like mastodon.org://foo@bar.com

The worst of all possible worlds is signaling that you are just breaking shit, like ^foo@bar.com.

@J12t people got used to URLs, email addresses, twitter handles and whatever the other proprietary social medias use

@user@domain.tld will do fine if whole Fediverse uses it and we get large enough for wide-scale adoption

Regarding large-scale adoption, if Fediverse accounts and email accounts are the same that would mean a huge chunk of Fediverse accounts are gmail

Also, will we get subaddressing for Fediverse accounts?

der.hans

@J12t account+string@domain.tld

for delivery the token ( often a plus sign ) and the string get ignored to deliver the mail to account

makes it easy to create unique email addresses

@lufthans ah. One way of doing it. Also, the jabber way. Not sure what exactly the fediverse use cases are there, however, as they are probably different from the ones for email and IM. Jabber mostly used it for different devices, and some for work / non work.

der.hans

@J12t Fediverse is more about public social services than email, so having a unique address for every entity one interacts with makes less sense

if we had mostly private end to end, then they could be useful for specific topics or projects, e.g. LuftHans+SeaGL and LuftHans+SCaLE, but the Fediversian way would more likely include lists and hashtags
