@yogthos Also, they have your data now. That's nice, what the fuck is TikTok and the CPC going to do with it that can personally affect you? Unless you're a prominent figure Western politics, science and technology, or military, China has better things to do than monitor which dog video or cat meme you like. No Western country has extradition treaties with China and even if they did, they'd have dual criminality clauses so unless you break the law in your country China can't touch you. @AgreeableLandscape yeah exactly, seems to me people should be far more concerned about the data their own government collects about them @ninpnin @AgreeableLandscape people living in the west should be a lot more concerned about their own governments collecting this sort of information via western companies because these governments actually have agency over western citizens unlike China @ninpnin @AgreeableLandscape I think the western system is the worst of all worlds, you have largely unregulated companies who collect personal information and sell it to anyone who'll pay for it, including the government. At least in China there are actual privacy laws and limits on what information companies are allowed to collect https://www.wsj.com/articles/china-passes-one-of-the-worlds-strictest-data-privacy-laws-11629429138 @yogthos @AgreeableLandscape To me 21st century China is truly the worst of both worlds. So I guess our perceptions of reality diverge so fast now that productive conversation is impossible. @AgreeableLandscape @yogthos @adiz@outerkosm.us I know several people who have lived there, some of which were born there. @ninpnin @AgreeableLandscape same here, and sounds like people we know have a different impression. There is such a thing as selection bias. @yogthos @AgreeableLandscape Selection bias is irrelevant here, I only wanted to rebut the claim that I only get my information from "cherry picked media". Of course people who left the country have a different impression of those who ended up staying there. And those who hang out in ML circles, for that matter. I'm well aware of that, and I hope you are too. @ninpnin @AgreeableLandscape sure that's fair, but when you look at any actual statistics from China they show far higher levels of happiness and government satisfaction than pretty much anywhere in the west. So, it's not just my biases or those of people who hang out in ML circles. This is the view of the vast majority of people who actually live in China. @yogthos @AgreeableLandscape Where does the discrepancy between China's internal statistics and international happiness surveys come from? @yogthos @AgreeableLandscape Well, China does not appear anywhere near the top of world happiness report. Please let me know what data you prefer over that. I assume you have some. @yogthos its republicans and its barely about tiktok at all. Its about how much they hate china and want to make a pariah of them for not demonstrating their right-wing ideals. Its about control- specifically controlling domestic politics by choosing international alies. Its the reason the modern republican party is so in love with Victor Orban, Putin, and Qatar. @yogthos @withaveeay don’t be absurd, the NSA and all the other agencies should be allowed to do so as well. America, what a role model. @DavidNielsen @withaveeay America is capitalist dude, if NSA and other agencies want the date they have to pay for it like everyone else. :) |

If I was the Twitter CEO, all I would say is "we're doing the same thing as Twitter".
