A TikTok ban is more likely than not.

While the USA demands that TikTok divest itself from Chinese ownership, the company itself says that even with a sale, that would not change its data flows or access.

I really hope there's a Fediverse alternative to TikTok soon!

It doesn't have to provide anything similar to TikTok's algorithms, but I think short form video is a legitimate use case for ActivityPub.

@greenback You can use Pixelfed that way right now, but the UI resembles Intagram more than anything.

@atomicpoet Never having used Tiktok myself, I only know the Tiktok videos from Instagram, so ...

@atomicpoet So what do we call this Tik Tok replacement? Bing Bong? Dink Donk? Waystr? The naming of names is important to me. It gives us all a handle on the concept. I humbly submit a possible "seed" Wayster/Bing-Bong video:

Atomic Birdseed

@atomicpoet ByteDance may say that now, but I suspect new investors would have something to say about it.

Anyway, I banned it from my networks some time ago.

DELETED

@atomicpoet I know tiktok has a lot wrong with it, but it rubs me the wrong way that all of a sudden they are worried about privacy being invaded on social media when, here in the US, big tech companies there are already doing the exact same

@atomicpoet video on the fediverse is too expensive, S3 alone is horrible, my instances has struggled with StorJ getting blocked by Google, and others have struggled too. I propose another soluation. The fediverse app but instead of the usual model user purchase a device and plug in in their home which acts as there personal account and server

@skymtf Yes, video is too expensive and that problem is actively being worked on.

@atomicpoet I don't want a fediverse TikTok because short form videos are brain rotting. It's okay for memes and stuff like that, but it's become a terrible and unfortunately popular way of consuming online content. I keep looking at my mother and my sisters scrolling on their phones all day, wasting every second with dopamine rushes of useless content.

@atomicpoet I'm concerned about the viability of storing so much data, videos take up a ton of storage, and peertube isn't exactly thriving right now.
