How to convince the world that everything is okay:

Spread rumours about a decentralized social network.

After all, Meta can’t be in trouble if they’re developing something new, right?

Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I think Meta is stuck in a death loop.

But their demise will be much slower than Twitter’s.

@atomicpoet Twitter really seems to be on the fast track to failure... $42K/mnth for API access? And that the lowest level? Insanity.

@Tweetfiction It won’t happen suddenly. But in a decade or so, we’ll all start to wonder, “What happened to Meta?”

My partner list their wallet recently, and when reporting it to the RCMP hoping it gets turned in, the constable suggested that they check Facebook, because, and I think it's a direct quote, "a lot of old people are still using it exclusively". If I still had money on Meta, that would have made me pull up qtrade right quick to sell.

@atomicpoet 100%. Facebook's "identity" was to steal others concepts, scale them and make them work better.

Meta isn't even able to do that anymore.

@atomicpoet Instagram has a major problem with fake spam cloned lookalike accounts. and literally refuse to do anything about.

These accounts copy every single photo of an account, copy the profile photo, make a fake account off by ONE character, buy followers/following to match close to the account they are cloning and then spam the actual account’s real followers.

Instagram should be able to detect this. Once reported they should be able to immediately block the account.

They do not

Zuck dumped billions into the metaverse and suddenly effectively dumped that for some sort of nebulous AI thing. It's not a good look

@olavf Isn’t he still developing the Metaverse?

@atomicpoet I think management-speak is "deprioritized", as in dropping from billions to *maybe* millions. I suppose someone sat him down and explained this is a long-term garden if it blooms at all

After all, it's a repeat of today's social media ~ a bunch of walled gardens, except people that have bought on are spending stupid amounts of money for things like "property NFTs" to companies that may not even exist next year

@atomicpoet I would agree with you. They have Facebook which is losing popularity and is becoming known as an old person site. They bought Instagram and it's doing ok. They've completely failed at VR and pretty much sunk the Oculus brand. I don't know what they're doing with Instagram, but it's the only thing they've got that isn't dieing, but they don't seem to be innovating at all.

@atomicpoet I’m on it because that’s where my family and older friends are. But the content being presented to me is not relevant. Many scantily clad tik tik rips and then straight into men’s rights videos and then down the right wing hole. It’s is nuts. Its five posts which aren’t “suggested” and “sponsored” to see something from someone I know or follow. And it’s a rat eating it’s own rail since the video auto plays on your phone so it thinks you want more of that content. It’s the worst.

@atomicpoet and Twitter's already non fast enough for my taste

@atomicpoet I wonder if their user base is going to have to slowly age out? The main reason I'm still there is keeping in touch with my 85 year old mom, and the fact that the readership for one of my wife's writing genres (cozy romance) trends old (though there are signs of a younger readership moving in).

It's just crazy for me how obsessed Zuckerberg has become.

Many companies have obsessed about technologies in the past.

#Microsoft was obsessed with touchscreen-friendly #UIs when #Windows8 came out as well as the #WindowsMobile operating system. They were able to realise that people didn't like it, so they moved on. Where #Nokia got obsessed with the #WindowsMobile idea and never moved to #Android, resulting in their death.

#Blackberry was the first company to release a "smartphone" at that time. They knew people wanted to email and communicate more efficiently on their phones, and phones were no longer just for calling. So they released the full qwerty-keyboard. But they got stuck with it and didn't realise the strengths and flexibility of touchscreen-keyboards and the screen real estate that you lose with hardware keyboards. So their phones died out.

I think all social media has a natural lifespan. #Facebook is at the end of its.

They're just hoping their barrier to entry is lower, even if the product is vaporware.
