@ParadeGrotesque I wish I had read this in high school rather than having to figure it out over years of work

college_physics

@ParadeGrotesque keep in mind though that in most parts of the world there is not even a pretense of a carnival game

Just those who serve and those who get served

casey is remote

@ParadeGrotesque I'll work for the carnival that will pay me the most money 😎

@ParadeGrotesque Rich kids don't do throws. Their family owns the carnival and they will inherit it

@ParadeGrotesque Yea I really like boot theory.

When I was younger, I would use cheap disposable razors until I cut myself several times in one shave. Because I was so poor :(

@psiie @ParadeGrotesque

Too bad you didnt know that you can sharpen the #razerblade

Use a wet Q-tip across the metal blade(s) a few times.

Actually just last year I saw a 30sec video of a 100 yr old sharpening device. For the double edge removal #disposable

Why didnt I know they once had these tools? AND, why have i almost never seen anything about sharpening todays blades? Once the cat is out of the bag, sales will slow down, i think.

@ParadeGrotesque Every self-made billionaire story about "starting out in a garage" glosses over the fact that the garage was attached to their millionaire parents' mansion.

LN :anarchoheart3:

@BrianBinh @ParadeGrotesque Doesn't have to literally be a mansion. Who the fuck has a spare garage?

cat anthropologist 🏳️‍⚧️

@BrianBinh not quite true, but the idea is, the carnival *needs* for someone to beat the odds periodically, or noone will step up and play!

Matthew Booth

@ParadeGrotesque Now all I can think about is screenshots of screenshots.

@ParadeGrotesque there's another layer to this metaphor: Carnival games will often *let* one person win a very large, easily seen prize in order to make the game look more winnable. Even further, they will use a ringer who later *returns* the prize, thus ensuring everyone else gives them tons of money just to keep trying.

@ParadeGrotesque Yeah, true.

But wow, writing out the date like that seriously trippted me up (maybe because En is not my first langueage?).

Mr_Fahrenheit

@ParadeGrotesque this broad generalization and perpetuation of the class system could benefit from a statistical analysis

Lt.Cpl Хуёвый Пчеловод

@ParadeGrotesque 99% of billionaires have same origin story:

"He built his company from nothing when his parents gave him a small loan of $X million dollar by taking out a 2nd mortgage on their 3rd vacation home"

Rog

@ParadeGrotesque

Without an even playing field meritocracy is BS.

Just Matthew

@Rog

It isn't a game, and if it were we ought all be playing for the same team. As long as you live by the stories written by capitalists, you will be confined to the role they ascribe to you.

@ParadeGrotesque

@ParadeGrotesque And boy, do the rich kids get mad when you tell them the game was rigged for them. I mean, it doesn’t make you a bad person to benefit from your parents’ wealth, and sure, there are a lot of hard-working rich kids. But dang, have the self awareness and intelligence to admit there’s no true meritocracy at play here. And HELP others get to play the game!

Remembering the VC who wanted to know where my cofounder went to kindergarten

He was checking pedigree

@ParadeGrotesque oh wow, I have it screenshotted and saved too, didn't know it was that popular.

Another recent favorite of mine is this one about being a minion or a professional, from a person who rejected $40k for an unethical NDA offered by Twitter: news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3

Wisconsin, Hello!

@ParadeGrotesque And then there's me. Hey can you hook me up with a job at the carnival? I've sent about a hundred applications, only about 10% call back, and I can't get past the 3rd interview...

Aido

@ParadeGrotesque there needs to be a website of posts to show your kids at various ages.

punko

@ParadeGrotesque yep, I have this saved on my desktop and look at it periodically. Thank you for sharing!

Just Matthew

@ParadeGrotesque

Never seen that yet it's very accurate. The game is rigged. The fact it's a game is the first level upon which it is rigged.

TrumpsTinyHands

@ParadeGrotesque @IAmDannyBoling And when the money they loaned to the middle class kids that want more throws suddenly evaporates (because a different rich kid running a bank somehow doesn’t understand how interest rates work), they expect the carnival to force the kids working there to band together and give them all their money back out of their own pockets.

Privatize the bullseyes and hand the carnival barkers the losses.
