Meta just laid off 10,000 people.

This follows 11,000 job cuts back in November—now totalling 21,000 people within a year.

Additionally, 5,000 jobs will now go unfilled.

While I heavily dislike Meta and everything it stands for, it gives me no pleasure when people lose their livelihoods.

While Twitter's difficulties gets more press, Meta's disarray is worth paying attention to—especially since they hope to eventually join the Fediverse.

@TruthSandwich @fediversenews ActivityPub is an open protocol. Your server may choose to block them, but that doesn't change that ActivityPub is what it is.

People did not do this much hand-wringing over the STASI losing their jobs.

"Jobs jobs jobs" 🕵️

Those ppl are very smart. They know what they were doing.

@tasket @fediversenews Hand-wringing? No.

Acknowledging the nature of capitalism? Yes.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews cutting their workforce while they are planning a new income stream centered on offering more user support for people who will pay them. Hmmm... 🙄

@atomicpoet @fediversenews I think this likely means they will move a lot faster and a lot more decisively on the things they actually decide to do. Will be interesting to see if ActivityPub remains something they will focus on or not. Only the most critical projects will get their attention now.

The Federal Reserve will be happy. Don’t they want two million out of work before they stop raising rates? 🙄

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Supposedly, last fall the total employee count was about 87,000. So significant cuts.
