@peterdeppisch the original programmer wasn't getting paid enough! You seem like a Swiss-army-knife ,πππ @hotheadhacker The "6 levels of "if then else" was written by an IBM consultant with a P.h.D. The program went to EOJ with my fix. But since they could not prove I fixed (Magic Number 7+/-2.) It was never implemented. They programmed a work around. This is 1963(?) and I am still pissed. @hotheadhacker One more story. There is the Magic Number 7+/-2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Magical_Number_Seven,_Plus_or_Minus_Two (Complements from a better programmer than I) 6 levels of "If then else". Program hung. Took me two days of concentration to find the "if then else of 6 levels" did not compute. But I knew it had to be the bug as that was the only part of the program that was not decipherable. Tip: Flip through a listing and look for spaghetti code. πβ @peterdeppisch God, it's kind of discussion that I will bring on the table with my friends and will increase my popularity amoung the circle βΊοΈ.. I better take a screenshot of it. I would like to listen to more of these stories and your experience! I hope you get some time in the near future ππ @hotheadhacker LOL I was called the "Blue Baron", i.e. IBM. hardware. I got them all. That was in reference to me being German born. @hotheadhacker By the way Snoopy is my favourite cartoon character of all time. That and the little red haired girl. And we have been together for 40 years. @peterdeppisch i am still catching up with The Simpsons βΊοΈ @hotheadhacker What - you don't know about Snoopy flying a Sopwith Camel bi-plane https://peanuts.fandom.com/wiki/World_War_I_Flying_Ace Your de-bugging skill will increase once you read Peanuts. LOL And I have more stories. LOL @peterdeppisch +1 added to my list βΊοΈβΊοΈ @peterdeppisch thanks for sharing this βΊοΈβΊοΈβΊοΈ also I want to increase my debugging skills @hotheadhacker How about Chess Skills πβ @peterdeppisch I was going to ask you about this book! Will read it soon! See you later, good bye π @hotheadhacker The only bugs I had problems with was my own. I am freelancing and get paid when the program is done. A bug is killing me. Two weeks - the customer is unhappy. I am unhappy and near tears. Went for a drive on the Autobahn and then realized I had altered the assembled machine code. Never ever do that. Fix the source code, re-compile the program and run and test. Big, huge lesson learned. No short cuts. They will kill you, |
@hotheadhacker If the program had a bug it was call Peter time. I could tell stories. One bug had been alive and well for 3 month. I was asked to see what I could do. An IBM 1401 computer for the night LOL and by 2 or 3 A.M. the bug was toast. The phrase: "I am here" was liberally placed throughout the code. The original programmer was not happy.
