Yesterday I migrated to a new Mastodon server and recorded the whole process.
I hope this short tutorial can give other people the confidence that they can do it too if they ever feel inclined.

@matt just yesterday a friend explained to me reasons that I might want to someday. Thanks for sharing. 👍 @matt Thanks! For visibility/searchability of the post above: #HowTo #Mastodon #feditips #newcomers #newbies #MastodonHelp #Instances #switchInstance #move @matt Great video, thank you! This helped dispel a lot of my hesitations with moving servers. It probably should have been obvious to me, but I didn’t realize that redirected accounts are excluded from search. That’s very smart. @richallum It was a bunch of little things, I think. Having my own domain has always been something I value (been blogging for 13 years 😳), and I just wanted to better-control the stability of my server. Whenever there's an influx of users, mastodon.social could get unreliable, and I shouldn't have that issue now since my server is just me 😁 @smokinjoe2122 Yeah, I hear you. I made this video back in November and it's actually doing a bit better than average. Would love to see more resources out there that make Mastodon feel a little less scary to people 😀 @matt I’m toying with the idea of creating a Mastodon server for my company and watching this video demystified the process. Thanks, Matt! @matt Well that's useful! I don't wanna migrate but I do think about: what if I have to, one day? Thank you. Very nice of you to do such a cleanly shot and produced guide. @dav1d Thanks! Old posts don’t move, they stick around on the old server, but you can’t bring them with you. @matt @OlDude82 So is mine 😁 You certainly don’t have to, and I think I said in the video that most people should probably just use a big one, but I liked the idea of owning my own domain. |
This was my favorite moment from the video.
TLDR moving accounts is slower than I expected, so this video took all day to make 😂
