If you assume our findings of 10x reach, Mastodon at 9.5m users has as much reach as almost 100m Twitter users. With this milestone Mastodon currently has 1/3 the reach of Twitter, a remarkable achievement for a purely user supported platform.

@mike Would love to see those 10x findings. Did you publish something about this?

Ben Thompson

@mike @mmccue that is a good read, thank you. Can't disagree with any of that from personal experience.

On the points in the piece about activity on Twitter, don't know if you saw this recent research paper. (HT @hildabast )

Lots of good stuff in it, including suggestion that over half of all tweets (o/w large proportion are presumably replies and retweets) are bot-generated.

@mike the obvious question is, are the types of audiences similar? Isn’t there a heavy about of selection bias affecting the mastodon audience?

@wyatteich We have very few ways of knowing as analytics information is limited. We can only go be anecdotal information. However most users polled by me personally relay a 10x experience.

@mike but how will I know what Elon thinks?

Chris Trottier

@mike Based on my own engagement experiences, I believe this.

@atomicpoet This was the original blog post. Our findings have been somewhat validated since with other users reporting similar experiences. There's also some empirical data:

@mike Yes but the reach effect has hit 98.4 percent of me so that statistic alone is significant…to ME!
