My main concern with alcohol is all the extra empty calories, I'd rather ingest more good stuff overall.
I still like a good drink, but I want to be less casual with it, I'll keep it for special times.
Also toying with the idea of steeping hops to make a sort of concentrate to use with fizzy water~ I don't like sweet, but I like bitter :>.

@rek
I'm avoiding beer and wine too lately and drinking just still water. I thought that fizzy water was bad for teeth enamel, but it's apparently true only for sugary-carbonated stuff.

@zabow you're right, fizzy water is mildly acidic and could pose a problem if consumed in great amounts, esp bad if there is lime added in there every time, but yea, that's only a problem if you drink it regularly (I certainly don't). I still mainly rely on still water :>.

@rek oh you can straight up buy hup tea, i’ve bought it from Whole Foods. feels a little silly in that it costs roughly the same as a beer, but it’s delicious. hoplark.com/collections/classi

@rek if you add in some nutritional yeast, the flavor compounds tend to come through better. Seems to be the trick that Lagunitas uses for their hoppy refresher.

@rek my friends make a really good hop water and that definitely seems to make a huge difference. I think it gives the compounds something to bind to? Temp is also very important.

@rek I've been enjoying the new hop infused water options that are coming back. I quit drinking a couple of years ago and I feel so much better over all. Fizzy water is my new staple and hops are an awesome addition. They're easy to get & make tea with

@pinky problem is I cant find hop buds locally, all places sell pellets... which I'm not sure will work as well. Seems like it would tho? I've only ever steeped buds.

@rek they're a bit out of season right now. Best time to get flower is fall when they're harvested. I've had good luck on eBay (I used to brew beer). Surely you could use pellets though. Obviously would need a filter...hmmm...

@pinky I used to brew beer too, but back in Montreal (even made hop ice cream one time, was very good).
The shops I looked up in my city only ever seem to sell pellets, regardless of season. (Maybe its what ppl prefer now? anyway, last time I made beer was in 2011.) When I visit I'll ask them :>, maybe they can point me in the right direction, but you're right, fall will likely be better for a hop search overall.

@rek one challenge I'm sure you'll recall is the competition with commercial brewers. 😁 Wonder if that's changed. I last brewed around 2017.

R E K

@pinky how do you mean competition with local brewers?

pinky.

@rek competition for the available whole flower hops. There was a period when I was brewing that Homebrewers had a difficult time getting the popular hops because commercial brewers had contracts to get first dibs. Maybe it's not a thing anymore.
