@gamingonlinux I'd say a combination of experience and obviousness, but if you want something more concrete, here's a previous bug report on the subject:
Appears I guessed wrong about the motivation for not fixing it; it's not "we'll get to it but it's not a priority", it's a deliberate stylistic choice. "The" gets ignored but "a" and "an" don't. I think it's an odd decision, but ultimately it's theirs to make.
