This superb story in the NY Times shows how a single pharmaceutical company with a single drug has stolen $114 billion (that’s BILLION) dollars from taxpayers and patients.

The real lesson should be that legalized bribery has broken our political system. The theft was legal. It’s still legal. Everyone knows how to fix the problem, but Congress won’t do it.

Then ask why new drugs for MS bring up the cost of older drugs instead of driving them down.

When you have no choice but to take the medication pharma has no incentive to lower cost.

@JamesGleick @isotope239 @aintist My wife has MS. Her doctor originally prescribed Gilenya. That medication is about $11,000 per month with a 50/50 success rate. We need single payer, universal health care yesterday. #singlepayer

I’m on Tysabri it’s about 13K per month and it’s kept me stable but still disabled.

Untelated- before MS I couldn’t draw- learned I could when my kids had to draw for homework- best guess is brain forming new pathways around lesions.

Prior to MS my stick figures were bad, this drawing was about a month after.

I figure it’s not well known that their can be positive changes- it’s worth trying new things.

@aintist @daddoo @JamesGleick A sidewise comment on your newly discovered drawing skills; I think your theory about your brain finding new pathways is correct. I taught intro drawing courses for years and the first exercise I gave students was to draw by imagining tracing the object they were looking at but without looking down at their paper as they moved the pencil. This was deliberately done to force the brain to form new pathways and it almost always worked.

People developing new skill with traumatic brain injuries is a well known phenomenon- but it’s generally after serious injury like a concussion from a fall or a spike through the head.

None of my doctors had seen it before with MS

@JamesGleick Yet another data point demonstrating that the US healthcare system is broken.

@JamesGleick You’re right of course. Congress won’t do it because they all “profit” from today’s warped system. And we keep electing the same Congress and expect a different result.

Even when its illegal its still legal.

Rick scott ran the largest medicare theft in history. His punishment was a $300 million golden parachute, a seat in the senate and the chair of the NRSC.

@Spicewalla @JamesGleick I was just listening to the If Books Could Kill podcast episode on John Gray's Men Are from Mars, Women Are From Venus, and it made the point that this country coddles and rewards major grifters. (Gray has no real expertise, a Ph.D. from the same diploma mill his then-wife and also a self-help grifter Barbara De Angelis got hers from, the now-defunct Columbia Pacific Univ.; both also very active in Transcendental Meditation.)

@Spicewalla @JamesGleick DOJ and Florida’s finest shows all of us that white collar crime, connected to politics? Means no indictment. Or slap on hand, at best. Who said there’s a balanced scale? Not in Corrupt Capital of the World.
