I've had the idea for a weird kind of Twitter client for years. With Mastodon being all open, I've decided to do the experiment:

What if your Timeline looked like iMessage. A normal timeline confuses me to no end because everything is out of context.

My experiment, Ebou, is a Mastodon client that looks like iMessage. Conversations are grouped by friends and sorted by recent postings.

It is super basic right now, but this already feels much more natural to me ๐Ÿ˜€

@terhechte @stevej I think this is genius and what Normal People(tm) want.

Craig Hofman Art

@terhechte that client idea sounds brilliant to me. If you have some sort of beta list feel free to add me to it ๐Ÿ˜.

mmu_man

@terhechte hm you could probably also group by hashtag I suppose?

Doug Jones

@terhechte I've been hoping to see something along these lines! Hope you keep working on it and I can try it soon!

Dan Betcher

@terhechte ๐Ÿคฏ not sure if itโ€™ll work, but super excited to see the experiment in action! I love that the open nature of mastodon can allow wild ideas like this to be explored! ๐Ÿ‘

Michael D. Ivey

@terhechte I love this - we need more experimentation around alternatives to reverse chronological

Afif

@terhechte bold of you to assume I have friends, what if Iโ€™m a hermit?

Jaymi Elford (she/her)

@terhechte I love this idea. When do you think others can play with this idea?

Lucas โœฆ

@terhechte Neat idea! Reminds me, how on old phones, SMS was just a chaotic list of messages sorted by date, until Apple sorted them by contact.

Sandy Corzeta

@terhechte@mastodon.social this looks awesome and manageable for someone who has small following list ๐Ÿ‘€

We're Not In Kansas Anymore

@terhechte Order out of chaos? Sounds good to me.๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ™‚

John Gordon โšก๏ธ

@terhechte That would be interesting, especially if it can track hashtags that I follow too. What are you thinking for replies? I find those more complicated to follow in the classic Twitter/Mastodon style (and donโ€™t get me started on the Slack threading implementation).

Arunmozhi

@terhechte@mastodon.social I wonder how discussions are handled. Because in the timeline view I can read through conversation involving multiple people happening as they happen. If it's broken into parts and spread across profiles, it might become difficult to follow.

But for everyday browsing of updates from everyone - this is a great way.
๐Ÿ‘Œ

June Blender

@terhechte Great work. Following you so I don't miss your beta.

Brendan

@terhechte any chance you might release it? Iโ€™d be keen to give it a spin.

Oxymetheus

@terhechte Feels very natural to me, too. Reverse-chronological is at least better than algorithmic popularity-contest, but still prioritizes breaking news and hot takes. For some the ephemerality is the point, but the last thing I need on the internet is more throwaway fluff. Something closer to an RSS feed, but with comments & conversation, is what I really want. iMessage isnโ€™t a bad model at all. Keep it up! See where it leads.

Eric Gustafson โ˜‘๏ธ

@terhechte Thats actually pretty cool.. though id probably also want the ability (when desired) to view a standard chronologically ordered timeline .. but grouping them by friend/contact is a pretty novel and great idea.

Kommonplace

@terhechte
That is crazy... and I'm signing up as soon as you're open for beta testers.

Itโ€™s Colin

@terhechte what a great idea! Itโ€™s hard to believe text messaging didnโ€™t group by conversation before iMessage. I would love to see what this does to timelines.

Gus Arroyo

@terhechte perhaps choose who or even which conversations or #s do you want as chats and leave the rest in a traditional timeรฑineโ€ฆ

Gary Owen

@terhechte oh no! You figured out the right way to do non algorithmic social media feeds!?!

:PUA: Shlee fucked around and

@terhechte ABSOLUTELY. The idea that the timeline of mixed toots is more important than the timeline of your friends/followers timeline (like reading their blog or tumblr)

There is little or no incentive on Mastodon to view anybodies profiles directly.

This is lovely

Thorne Lawler

@terhechte would love to try it. Have you published any part of it?

Harold Daniel ๐ŸŒž ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

@terhechte That is pretty cool. I can imagine this evolving in some neat ways.

isaiah

@terhechte @zacbir love to see experiments like this. bring me ALL THE WEIRD!!!!

social media needs constant reinvention and it was the best part of the first few years of twitter. glad to see it making a comeback.

Francis ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ Gulotta

@terhechte I love it! Pin your favorite people and never miss their updates.

Kristoffer ๐Ÿ„

@terhechte This is what I want too! Looks amazing ๐Ÿ™

Andy Chan

@terhechte Can make Telegram like Channels as different timelines.

Greg Nelson

@terhechte I donโ€™t know how it would work on a busy timeline, but I love such an original take using such a familiar
interface! ๐Ÿค˜

Chloe S.

@terhechte i really like this. consider me interested. anywhere i can try this experiment out?

Dan Skaggs

@terhechte Very interesting concept! Is it safe to assume that the left column would be sorted with the friend that posted the latest on top?

Jonathan Holbert

@terhechte This looks interesting! Please continue working on this idea!

Fripi

@terhechte
@stopthatgirl7 maybe another app you want to try out? โ˜บ๏ธ

terhechte

@nikkiana Thanks! Iโ€™ll be sharing progress on here. Itโ€™s really not finished yet :)

fantomcheung

@terhechte reminds me of the old RSS reader app: Mr. reader

Mike McCue

@terhechte A great idea. Love that you can experiment with these kinds of ideas without fear of anyone shutting you down.

ษˆฦจษฟoสœnษ˜vฯ…แ‚ง nษ˜ษˆฦจษฟษ’ฦ†

@terhechte Nice Idea for a detail view. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป I would miss the time sorted complete overview though. Add a hashtag sorted view to the master view.

terhechte

@expertmanofficial Itโ€™s not released yet. But Iโ€™m actively working on it and sharing progress here. It still lacks a lot of basic features (like login isnโ€™t implemented yet. Instead itโ€™s hardcoded to my account :)

Expert Plus ๐Ÿ€

@terhechte I hope you will do the web version of it :-)

Will wait for official release :-)

xuf :geraffel:

@terhechte I don't like when two people I follow engage on a conversation and the fragments of it gets mixed up with the rest of the time line. I feel like being in the middle of a room full of people having separated conversations. Would be great if it could also be possible to group threads

maegul

@terhechte So much this!! New social media doesnโ€™t just have to parrot the previous eraโ€™s formats! I hope all the best for this!

tech

@terhechte I will be happy to help you test it

Matias

@terhechte yes please!! When can I try it? ๐Ÿ˜

terhechte

@sigsegv Still lacks a lot of features, but Iโ€™ll be sharing progress here on Mastodon

Cruising Steveswijk

@terhechte Great Idea! Any plans to release it in some form? Would love to try it. Especially on a desktop.

terhechte

@Dr_jekyll832 Yeah! Once, the basics are implemented, Iโ€™ll start an alpha for Linux/macOS/Windows (maybe not all at the same time, Iโ€™m figuring this out as I go :-)

Kalle Kniivilรค

@terhechte
That's also the way Telegram works. I'd actually like to have a Telegram client with a unified timeline, so the other way around :-)
@anderspuck

Anders Puck Nielsen

@kallekn @terhechte Good point. This might be the reason why Telegram never really caught on for me.

Kalle Kniivilรค

@anderspuck
It's not bad for messaging, and I do read a few channels from time to time. But it's just too cumbersome to browse.
@terhechte

Anders Puck Nielsen

@kallekn @terhechte To me Telegram feels like work. Like an inbox that I have to stay up-to-date with.

didn't i already open xcode

@terhechte I love this, it also solves the problem of having one person you follow tooting WAY TOO MUCH and drowning out everyone else

terhechte

@MichaelTheGeek Thanks! Yeah, Iโ€™m continuing development on it, however it still lacks a ton of basic features before I could release it. Iโ€™ll be sharing progress here though :-)

Mike ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

@terhechte that is very cool. I could see hashtags being their own distinct channel too.

Michal Tynior

@terhechte @siracusa On last @atpfm you said that you had different way of consuming content on Twitter. I think this is what you might find useful for Mastodon๐Ÿ˜‰

Daniรซl Franke ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ

@terhechte Cool idea, but might bury people who don't post often, and might be overwhelming if you follow a lot of people.

Does it put the person who posted last at the top?

Would it maybe useful to have a "normal" timeline pinned at the top? Or maybe have that as an option?

How does it display hashtags that are followed?

Sorry for the whole inquisition, but the it's definitely worth a look once you feel ready to make it available.

terhechte

@ainmosni Thanks. I havenโ€™t figured out a lot of things. My plan is to dogfood it myself for some time to see what works and what doesnโ€™t.

CaptainMalu

@terhechte never thought about it but it is a really cool idea๐Ÿ’ก.
Love to see it come reality.

Jonathan Weber

@terhechte That's a really nice idea. Currently it sometimes almost feels like work catching up with all toots after a day without opening the app, so that would help a lot with reading everything that build up in smaller session and also allows for marking some stuff as read, like Newsbots etc.

Susan Beebe

@terhechte yes! Great idea โ€ฆ would love an ios app / beta tester

KlyX

@terhechte I would love to give it a try as well :)

terhechte

@klyx Thanks! Iโ€™ll be sharing updates on here :)

Pekka

@terhechte Can this sort the entries in the same way as iMessages does, new items at the bottom?

terhechte

@pekka Yeah, thatโ€™s the plan. So that you can pick up on a โ€œtoot-streamโ€ (or whatever thatโ€™s called) in chronological order - and not reverse-chronological

Giles Paterson

@terhechte This looks really nice. I follow a few mastodon accounts in my feed reader using the RSS functionality, which gives a similar experience. I use it mainly for informative accounts that I want to be able to read at my leisure rather

Daniel "DazzaJay" Fitzgerald๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

@terhechte one thing I would love to see again is the second version of the Google+ UI, as it was pretty much perfect. All comment threads were simple and easy to find, the overall layout was just neat and simple. I really miss it.

terhechte

@DazzaJay tbh I donโ€™t remember that, but Iโ€™ll have a look at some old screenshots. I do remember the Google Wave, and how that tried to visualize super-nested conversations.

Daniel "DazzaJay" Fitzgerald๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

@terhechte
Way to tell the difference in the old screenshots:
Version 1: Dark Grey bar at top.
Version 2: Dark Grey Bar gone.
Version 3: Red bar at top (green when viewing communities)

Version 2 was the best.

Tristan Henderson #UCURising
@terhechte Cool! I have actually proposed something similar as a summer project for our students, so it is reassuring that I am not the only person who thinks that this is a sensible idea.
jrduncans

@terhechte @glennf I wonder what the impact of using this long term would be on the psychology of para-social relationshipsโ€ฆ

Nora Chan

@terhechte Now I see what "innovative" should mean: an iMessage-like social media client that you can use to interact with your followers and followees as if you were messaging with your friends in iMessage. I'm looking forward to seeing how the concept of "group" integrates into this new idea. And it has the potential to end the endless scrolling problem that social media has caused. Good job! Now you have been my โ€œpinned conversationโ€.

terhechte

@norachan Thanks! Iโ€™m also still finding out how this will shape up. Itโ€™s an experiment after all :-)

Mensch, Marina

@terhechte fits a small group of friends & followers, not a really big one. Depends on what you prioritize: Toots for ie. news/topics or What your friends have to say.
There is a difference between microblogging & messaging.

Limping

@terhechte yes, it suppose to be a great idea.
The app is not in AppStore yet?

terhechte

@limping No, not yet. Still missing a lot of features. But Iโ€™ll be sharing progress on here :-)

Sandro Pereira

@terhechte this is amazing. Love the out of the box thinking here.

Walford East

@terhechte Looks great, can we test? For all the talk of Mastadon clients being the next UI playground this is the first example Iโ€™ve seen that actually looks different to a Twitter client.

terhechte

@walfordeast Thanks. No, not yet, it is still missing lots of features and has bugs. However, Iโ€™ll share progress on here :-)

Jan Tobias Muehlberg

@terhechte Oh please share when you feel it's ready. Happy to try and I hope it's not going to be for i-things only.

terhechte

@jtmuehlberg Thanks! indeed the app is cross platform (though I havenโ€™d had time to test on anything but macOS yet, that will happen later)

Brendan Jones

@terhechte love to see a different UI approach, even if I havenโ€™t decided yet if I like it or not. Good stuff on the experiment.

Michelle Moore

@terhechte I like it! Could there be 3 more โ€œpeopleโ€ on the left to represent: your home timeline, your local timeline, and your federated timeline? Or home at the minimum?

-karlos- ๐“„ฟ

@terhechte Fascinating!
Is there a repo, one could contribute?

I had a look in iMessage and am I right?:
The latest posts are most below,
so I can read old to newest top to down
as in normal live.
It would be great if you add that (optionally).

Xurxo Diz Pico

@terhechte Wow, love this idea! Can it be tried somewhere?

flo

@terhechte

cc @Boehler As you use Mac, you could like this idea (not alpha or beta yet)

Le Bottin des Jeux Linux

@terhechte
Great idea. Indeed what annoys me too is to be drowned by the flow of toots I follow. So I regularly unsubscribe (again this morning) from channels I like, because I need to follow certain sources for my site and I waste too much time on the other toots.

Daniel ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Jilg :sondrine:

@terhechte oh this is really cool! Thanks for building this Iโ€™ll need to try it out! (If youโ€™re interested, my company TelemetryDeck is gifting free subscriptions to developers of Fedi apps right now, no strings attached btw)
