I've decided to open source Ebou, the cross platform Mastodon Desktop Client.

You can find the repository here:

github.com/terhechte/Ebou

It also supports Windows, although this is beta and Windows binaries are not included yet (you'll have to compile it yourself). Attached is a Windows screenshot. Linux should be easy to support, too.

I'm open sourcing it because I think there's great value in a high quality cross platform Mastodon desktop client and I can't pull this off alone.

If you like Rust and would like to help out, check out the repository. I haven't had time to list issues yet, but it is easy to try out the app and see which things don't work yet 😀

The Ebou macOS #TestFlight is here! It explores a different kind of Mastodon experience.I'm eager to learn whether it works for you.

Many features are missing as I wanted to focus on a core experience. The website has more info: terhech.de/ebou.

These core ideas are

1. Timeline grouped by contact much like a messenger (Telegram, iMessage)
2. Show conversations as a "comment tree" to see the context and related interesting toots

Feel free to DM me for feedback

@terhechte I really like the idea and the app. Thank you very much for your work!
One idea: it would be great to be able to set the sort order of the second column in the app. Even if that would be different than in the iMessage UI, it makes more sense to me to see the newest messages at the top. Or maybe it would be enough to jump to the end of the second column automatically.

@terhechte @snipy this has columns but also novel traversal by contact.

@terhechte Howdy. I’m the project steward over at Firefish & Spacehost, but also developing Mastodon extensions. I really like what I’ve read about Ebou. I assume the conversation grouping works with standard ActivityPub, as is, and merely makes a more pleasant UX for those who use it as a personal timelines browser? I ask b/c some suggested that ou’re also extending the AP protocol to make this convo grouping a new feature of the masto API. I doubted that, but anything is possible :) - Matt

I've had the idea for a weird kind of Twitter client for years. With Mastodon being all open, I've decided to do the experiment:

What if your Timeline looked like iMessage. A normal timeline confuses me to no end because everything is out of context.

My experiment, Ebou, is a Mastodon client that looks like iMessage. Conversations are grouped by friends and sorted by recent postings.

It is super basic right now, but this already feels much more natural to me 😀

@terhechte might get a bit confusing is more than one friend/follow is participating in the same conversation, but I like the concept 🙂

@terhechte @glennf When people say Mastodon is a UI playground this is *exactly* what they mean.

This is actual innovation. Super cool!

@terhechte While you’re at it, try going all the way, and making those user specific timelines chronological instead of reverse chronological, so it would really work like a messaging app. Would make threads much more easier to read.
