@jaredwhite Wait, what? It's right there in the name. A podcast is exactly a broadcast audio show meant to be subscribed/listened/played on an iPod (apple device), managed through (as far as most users are concerned) the only program that can do so (iTunes, apple player/software).

@jaredwhite That you can listen to some of them on other platforms is a happy accident, one of the few times Apple only closed some but not all of the gates on their walled garden. AFAIK there are still plenty of iTunes-exclusive podcasts, not available as RSS feeds or listenable in other players.

Not accedental in the slightest! Podcasting actually grew out of the 2000s-era blogging community and news feed culture, hence the use of RSS as its underlying distribution mechanism.
