AFAIK there are still plenty of iTunes-exclusive podcasts, not available as RSS feeds or listenable in other players.

Not accedental in the slightest! Podcasting actually grew out of the 2000s-era blogging community and news feed culture, hence the use of RSS as its underlying distribution mechanism.
