@thor In Dutch we use the Dutch word “medicatie” for medication and we use the English word “drugs” for recreational substances.

@SuperDicq ah, in Norway we have a heavier preference for inventing our own words.

Denmark is the opposite.

we call a computer a "datamaskin"

the Danes just say "computer"

hilarious thing

"kuk i computeren" means "problem with the computer" in Danish

in Norwegian it means "cock in the computer"

@thor In the Netherlands we have a preference for stealing the English word for something if we don’t have a word for it yet.

For example everything anything recent like anything computer related is just the same as English here.

@SuperDicq we keep on inventing words

a tablet is a nettbrett - a net board or net slate

a web browser is a nettleser - a net reader

a floppy drive is a diskettstasjon - a discquette station

@SuperDicq granted, these are older loanwords put together; but they have been "Norwegified"
Thor 🇳🇴
@SuperDicq a driver, a chauffeur, is a sjåfør, for example
SuperDicq

@thor In Dutch we have French loan words too, but most of these come from after the Napoleonic era, like chauffeur.

Modern loan words are practically all English.

@SuperDicq we borrow words from English too. more so in day to day situations vs on print. we have this thing where we more often borrow from English when we're casually talking whereas on print we devise Norwegian words for things
SuperDicq

@thor I think we adopt a lot of English words because we generally have very high English proficiency, lots of international trade.

And because we’re a very small country we’re very used to having no Dutch translations for software and such. So the English computer terms stick because we mostly use English software.

@SuperDicq i think what makes us insist on making our own words is the fact that we were only liberated from Denmark in 1905. we refer to our years under another country as "the 400 year night"

@SuperDicq we are heavily patriotic. in terms of national pride we resemble the Americans more than most European countries

@SuperDicq since we have zero colonial history it's just this day of joy. rather innocent.
SuperDicq replied to Thor 🇳🇴

@thor Oh yeah we definitely struggle with our colonial history every time there is some nationalistic holiday.

@SuperDicq @thor and that’s just for “dutch” nationals as a dutch of Indonesian decent it runs even deeper in our communities as some were highly aligned with the colonial forces and some heavily against it. it’s not a fun topic but something worth talking about

cell replied to Henkery
@henkery Honestly, I'm quite surprised at how much of an issue it is for you folk over there; but considering the Indo (the term has lost its original mixed-race meaning over in Indonesia) and Dutch population in Indonesia vanished; it makes sense.

There are far more sensitive issues right now than dealing with the shadows of colonialism over here; seems like we made up with both the Dutch and especially the Japanese are all a-okay :)

@cell @henkery @SuperDicq @thor Without knowing much anything about the SEA region's history, I can only guess that the success of Hololive ID means that there's no open animosity at the very least. The CN branch didn't turn out so well, I'm afraid.

I've talked quite a bit with one Indonesian chap online and it seems like a very modern culture with the architecture being very distinctly inspired by India and India accessories.

@moth_ball @cell @henkery @thor I don’t know if the success of vtubers is a useful metric to measure international relations but I like this take nonetheless.

mothball蛾玉 replied to SuperDicq
@SuperDicq @cell @henkery @thor When you think of it as a foreign country specifically naming your country and marketing their culture to you, it wouldn't be very plausible if there's a lot of hate towards them in your country.

It's not a metric by any means but does at least confirm the existence of a large weeb community, as Cell said.
SuperDicq replied to mothball蛾玉
@moth_ball @cell @henkery @thor Yeah true, I like HoloID tho. Before HoloEN was a thing they were the only ones who could speak English.

I wonder if they are gonna come with more spinoffs in other languages as well. But I think HoloNL is never gonna happen. Not that I would want that tho, it sounds like a horrible idea.
