And now dead again, along with some old unused API keys, which proves that this was intentional and we and others were specifically targeted.

I wouldn't have swapped out the keys in the first place if there was even a shred of communication. Figured if nothing else this would push the issue.

Oh well, on to smaller but greener pastures.

@paul appreciate all you’ve been doing the past few days

Nitro230

@paul The whole way they are handling this is..... cowardly

swotam.games

@paul given who's in charge over there, you're probably better off distancing yourself from the shit show, even if doing so is painful from a business perspective.

Jeff C. 🇺🇦

@swotam I can't speak for @paul, but even if they can weather the business impact (and I think they can - @ivory is almost certainly going to be a huge hit) I have to imagine this being a real emotional hit.

As a developer, myself, I'd hate to see a long-time beloved project knifed in the back like this.

Every good app deserves a proper sunset.

swotam.games

@jeff @paul @ivory agreed, it’s completely unacceptable that they would do this without giving devs a proper heads up. However, when you look at who’s in charge at Twitter, does this really surprise you?

(niko)

@paul to overcome this, i’m now trying to build a tool that syncs my timeline to a private mastodon server… to many of my contacts still use twitter sadly and i can’t live without tweetbot, but ivory as twitter client could be my solution :D

(niko)

@paul my timeline in this case means the timeline of all the people i follow, not all of my own tweets/toots! basically my twitter home feed!

pierre

@paul hopefully some communication will be published during the work week. I really wanted to use Tweetbot. I subscribed today for the trial. Just heard about the app!

DELETED

@rursache @paul this has been my thought too. Twitter can't stop us all!! Fuck elon

Mailia

@rursache @paul I think Talon did this back in the day when Twitter limited the amount of users a single API key could have.

Eric Jennings

@paul what cowardly people they still have there who won’t own up to their actions and communicate them to you and the world.

Deacon Scott

@HitokiriEric @paul I’m sure they are all afraid of Elon’s wrath, understandably. Doesn’t make it right, but we all know who is calling the shots.

Eric Jennings

@iDeacon @paul spineless with a lack of character at the top sets the tone and trickles down to the rank and file.

Professor Charles Haas

@paul Sorry to hear this. You had a great product. I suspect #twitter is now going to be virtually dead to me (might just check via browser occasionally if I get any pings)

Ben 🌹 :NERevs:

@paul I'm so sorry that this ecosystem you've contributed so much to is being torn apart brick by brick but I'm happy to see @ivory and I hope it's the future.

Alex 알렉스

@paul keep up the work on ivory. You have a big fan base that will totally understand

David Harrison

@paul No question at this point, including no question about their (or maybe HIS) cowardice. Just incredible.

Rubicon

@paul Fascinating. You need to be aware of the purpose behind playing with you like a little mouse. You may eventually be permitted back on the bird, but what will you have learned from the experience? What concessions will be required? How will your future behavior be tempered? What cooperation is being extorted?

Jeff C. 🇺🇦

@rubicon @paul I can't imagine anybody putting serious ongoing development effort toward a 3rd party Twitter client at this point. Even if it were technically allowed.

Musk has made his message clear: "Drop dead"

Allowing existing functionality to work for existing users, though, would be nice.

Phil Amour

@paul sad times. I miss it when there were services with open APIs and people were building well designed and thoughtfully crafted premium clients, and making a living. Everything nowadays is just about engagement, maximizing revenue and manipulating people to click ads.

If there’s a Patreon, I’ll happily be a backer. The world needs more delightful 🤖 apps

Rob Prior

@paul onwards and upwards! Looking forward to the first release of @ivory and then the journey as it evolves 🙂

Suzy Richards

@paul Is there a limit on API keys you can have? Idly wondering whether each subscription user could have a unique key so they'd have to play whack a mole...

Adam Williams

@paul wondered how quick it would be. meanwhile idiot in chief tweeting about transparency

Karen Friesen

@paul thank you for the years of Tweetbot; it made Twitter a pleasure to use!

Susan :potion_lesbian:

@paul I plan to swap my subscription across to Ivory when it’s live. I truly hope enough do as well. Tapbots apps are a staple in my phone.

David Woje :podcast:

@paul I’ve used tweetbot since iOS 6, so a decade-ish? I feel I need a memorial ceremony when I delete it, the best way to experience twitter imho. Thanks @paul and @tapbots for all the love you put into it. Excited for the future.

Mark Veldhuis :ivory_elephant:

@paul Appreciate the effort. If Tweetbot is still in the App Store next month, I will renew my subscription, wether it's working or not.

David Harrison

@markveldhuis It’d be pretty unethical to keep Tweetbot in the store at this point though.

Mark Veldhuis :ivory_elephant:

@dharrison Agree. But if the app is still available I’ll renew the subscription. Just to support the awesome folks at @tapbots. They are the absolute best.

David Harrison

@markveldhuis Their problem is they have a lot of subs renewing in two weeks. Can’t let those renew on people.

David Harrison

@markveldhuis Absolutely. This shows exactly the kind of person Musk is. They deserve better.

David Harrison

@markveldhuis I’m hoping with the huge interest in Ivory they are going to have a hit.

Mark Veldhuis :ivory_elephant:

@dharrison Me too! I’m beta testing it, and loving it so far. Makes me feel right at home here. 😄

David Harrison replied to Mark Veldhuis :ivory_elephant:

@markveldhuis Same and agreed. It will be an instant buy for me.

Bernie Hofley :CApride: replied to Mark Veldhuis :ivory_elephant:

@markveldhuis @dharrison
Agreed. Even with some missing features (e.g., editable posts) @ivory will be an instant sub.

Bernie Hofley :CApride: replied to David

@dharrison @markveldhuis @ivory eventually. May or may not make it into the first public release (if @paul and co. Are going to try and get something out quickly).

Bushwhack

@markveldhuis @paul better option is to pull tweetbot and open a “tip jar” on ivory after the sub

Eudes Corrêa :verified_rj:🇧🇷

@markveldhuis @paul My annual subscription of Tweetbot will renew in 2 weeks, I won’t cancel it.

I appreciated all the work done on that app and I’m loving @ivory

halcy:icosahedron:

@paul time to swap in one of the keys the official apps use, just for kicks?

Josh Pennington 👨‍💻

@paul Is it possible to just support individual users putting in their own api credentials? Seems like they’d have a hard time shutting down thousands of applications all at once? (If a user can an individual still make API credentials- It’s been awhile)

Bushwhack

@joshpennington @paul fascinating question. I have no idea how this works though — not sure for hats possible unless they open source the code and since it looks like a similar codebase to ivory that might be tough. Also the iOS app is gonna be tough to push an API key update out for a non-functioning app.

Josh Pennington 👨‍💻

@Bushwhack @paul I went and tried to make a new API key and it appears that everything requires an “Elevated Application” which leads me to think this is no longer an open API for anyone to use.

Kevin Mulhall

@paul I will gladly continue to support you through a subscription on Ivory. As long as Tweetbot isn’t working, I’m no longer checking Twitter. If it’s dead, I’m done.

Henning Tillmann

@paul Would it be possible to set custom (= own) keys within the Tweetbot app? I know this is not easy for everyone, but at least the app would be usable for some.

Nic Hagan

@paul sorry for all the bs you're dealing with

Richard Hyland

@paul it must be on token count. My first client was a free windows client. It’s not been active for over a decade. It got suspended and other lesser used platform tokens didn’t

logan

@paul so unacceptable on Twitter’s behalf. @ivory will take the place of Tweetbot on my homescreen when it’s ready. grateful for all your work- over a decade of using Tapbots and won’t stop now.

James Musson 🔴

@paul I’ve just subscribed to a year of Tweetbot even though I don’t have a Twitter account any more … just wanted to show you solidarity and support.

It’s not much but hope it helps a tiny bit, will be purchasing #Ivory as soon as it’s possible!

Cory

@paul sorry to hear this. Love Tweetbot and you don’t deserve to be treated like this.

Steve Hayman √

@paul Many thanks for trying that quick albeit doomed experiment.

Amro

@paul infuriating. No way to do business

Roy Czlapinski :jedi:

@paul none of the development teams on any of the third party apps deserve to be treated like this. I’m sorry this is happening to you all

Nick Hobart

@paul wow. What a shitty experience for you.

sharon linne faulk

@paul well, that sucks. At least I went and grabbed those people who are still posting there (why?) and added them to my rss feed.

Jeremy Borthwick

@paul Thanks for making teeetbot home for so many years! Cant’t wait to pay for Ivory

Warner Crocker

@paul Abusive and cowardly behavior by a bunch of chumps.

bernie

@paul really excited to see what you do with Ivory. Looking forward to giving it a try.

James Neno

@paul I wonder if he has any clue how much ill-will he is fostering. You can't outrun this much bad karma, so many millions of people wishing his downfall. It will catch up to him and it's going to be glorious watching his destruction.

Your old pal, Boreal Tempest!

@paul This is some of the most unbelievably buffoonish developer-relationship management I've ever seen. Not to mention it's going to disengage a huge number of real human users from the platform entirely. It feels like something out of the early 00s where there were just no standards for how to run a business at scale.

Jason Imms :astro:

@paul I'm sorry Tweetbot has come to such an undignified and undeserved end, Paul. It's one of the few pieces of software that's been just a no-brainer subscription/purchase for me over the years. Y'all do great work.

jph

@paul this is the “I just wanted to see your hand” round of the game.

Joe Eversole

@paul what a bunch of cowards over there at Twitter. Get some stones and say “we’re disabling third party clients. Get bent.”

I look forward to subscribing to Ivory as soon as it goes up on the App Store.

G

@paul I just hope Elon goes on one of his rockets into the sun

David Watson

@paul why the heck is Twitterific for Mac still online?

Santiago Lema :amiga:

@paul I remember that the reason a client could not have both mastodon & twitter together was because Twitter API rules forbid it.

Isn’t it time to redirect all Tweetbot users to Mastodon / Ivory and explain what’s happening directly in the app ? (I know the beta isn’t out yet).

Jeff C. 🇺🇦

@santiago @paul Yeah, at this point I don't think Tapbots should feel obligated to honor any sort of rules Twitter has laid down.

My guess is that the focus is on getting Ivory into the App Store, after which converting all those old users will be paramount.

Hopefully they put some effort into improving Mastodon onboarding to handle the influx of new users.

Brian Mueller

@paul very sad, it was so nice to have it back for a couple hours. I can’t believe how bad the stock Twitter app is.

Christopher Korn

@brianmueller @paul It’s shocking to actually see how bad apps from multi billion dollar companies can be. Especially when you compare them to beautifully crafted apps like Carrot or Tweetbot. Thank you both for the incredible work you’re doing.

Bushwhack

@brianmueller @paul I wouldn’t Reddit without @christianselig I don’t Twitter without @ @tapbots I don’t weather without @brianmueller

I tried to use the default Twitter app and holy shit it’s terrible.

You guys are all awesome.
If tweetbot is dead, so is Twitter to me.

Christian Selig

@Bushwhack @brianmueller @paul @tapbots To be fair I sometimes weather without Brian it’s hard not to get wet when it’s raining outside

Bushwhack

@christianselig @brianmueller @paul @tapbots oh 100% true. Sometimes it’s definitely pouring outside andni still open the app just to have it tell me to “go fuck yourself” — only feels appropriate at that point

CJ

@paul It was nice to have a few more hours of Tweetbot use.

I didn’t really think the end of my Twitter use would happen this way, but here we are.

Matt Spurrier

@paul What's the bet it's so he can force users onto their own apps so they can get more revenue from ads... for those advertisers that actually still exist on the platform... :\

AlfArtigan

@paul the best revenge is creating a killer Mastodon client. Let us know when we can support your efforts.

Seth H.

@paul What cowardly behavior from Musk. Can’t say I’m not surprised though, seems exactly like the kind of bullshit he’d pull

Matt Stocum

@paul I’m anxiously waiting for the second Ivory goes on sale.

Hobbs

@paul it’s a real shame, I’ve been using your app since it first came out. I have now walked away from Twitter, it’s been a cesspool for a while and your app helped me filter out the idiots. Without it I don’t see the point of being there.

Loving Ivory it makes Mastodon a lot more user friendly and can’t wait to pay you some money for it.

Orren Merton

@paul I was an early user of Tweetbot both on iOS and macOS and now I’m an Ivory tester. I appreciate what you and your team do, and I’m grateful you’re putting so much energy into Ivory. Onward and upward!

Chris Ferrell

@paul appreciate you giving it a shot. If it’s the end at least you went out swinging. That said @ivory is great so far and I’ll happily subscribe.

Paul Whitehurst

@paul thanks for trying. This is so infuriating,m; I can’t imagine how bad it must for for y’all! Loving @ivory though!

Techronic9876

@paul @khaost does Twitter charge for api usage? I know 3rd party Reddit apps have to pay for api access

Matt 😎

@paul I'm so sorry about this. It sucks. I love using Tweetbot, and now I'm super bummed.

Ann Getty

@paul Well, thanks for trying. I got it to work briefly, then it died again. Dammit. I really liked Tweetbot, too. I’ll go back to waiting for Ivory.

Hector Cruz

@paul that’s a shame, thanks for the great app

nktn

@paul 😭 that’s sad, but worth to try

bdawg923

@paul the issue with mastodon is nobody is on here. Like 10 of the 100 accounts I follow are actually here. This sucks. Fuck Space Karen

Tim Chambers

@paul Very glad you are here, and that there is a here for you.

Corey E.

@paul cowardly and classless. Nothing should surprise me with those clowns anymore but somehow I still can’t believe they’d pull this.

Chris Isham

@paul this is so terrible. Tweetbot made Twitter for me, nothing else compares (or has for a long time). The native app is an awful, cluttered mess to wade through. You & your team truly made the best Twitter experience available. Here’s hoping there’s some sort of about face here & it gets reinstated. 🙏🏼

Alan González

@paul Cowards. And they’re still mute on the whole issue. New humble beginnings await.

cameronbanga

@paul Gotta release an update where users can add their own API keys. :)

:mastodonworld: Caleb

@paul My Tweetbot sub is Ride or Die at least until you get @ivory up for sale…

Patrik

@paul I’m sorry, man. This is such bullshit.

QueerBogWitch

@paul @skymoo Causing me genuine distress, and I'd love to shake the people (lbr, person) responsible. Thanks so much for trying!

Chazeon

@paul Thank you for the fantastic work. It is really a shame Twitter has become such a horrible company to work with. I will wait for you guys at the Ivory release.

J.I. Vicuña

@paul Seriously, after what Space Karen did, just pull the bird app (to avoid problems with the App Store subscriptions) and send a mass message with all the details about the ordeal. I cancelled my monthly sub (it was due next week), and will be moved to Ivory on launch day. Thank you for giving us almost 12 years of a usable experience on what’s now known as “the hellsite”.

古道京紗

@paul Would it be possible to set the API key that the user gets individually? If API keys are set individually for each user, it may be difficult for Twitter to regulate each and every one of them.

Bruce MacDonald

@paul I have never used Twitter other than through Tweetbot! I was always puzzled by Twitter polls, before the API supported them, and never experienced ads or an algorithmic timeline. I can’t imagine actively using Twitter without Tweetbot!

Thank you for your work, and like many others, I look forward to moving to Ivory when it’s available.

Victor Gasulla

@paul Paul, you can count on Tweetbot subscribers like myself to move our subscription to Ivory once it gets released. Twitter is only usable because of your app, if they turn it off, I am definitely bringing my user and money to Mastodon and Ivory. Fuck Musk and his dictatorship.

Niko Simonson

@paul Tweetbot was only reason I was still on Twitter. No way in hell I'm using the first-party app. Looking forward to what you're building next.

GadgetGav

@paul Very specifically targeted since Fenix is still working. (Although maybe I shouldn’t have said that).

GadgetGav

@paul Ironic that the other site told me this morning that it was my 15 year anniversary. I’ve been using Tweetbot for most / all of that time and it’s taken him 15 weeks to push me out of the platform.

Phillip Hallam-Baker

@paul That is a real shame.

My focus is on developing a next generation cryptographic infrastructure to enable end-to-end encrypted social media, chat, WebRTC.

Maybe we could repurpose Tweetbot to be a front end to Mastodon and end-to-end secure Mastodon with private groups etc.

Phillip Hallam-Baker

@paul A possible workaround would be to let users use their own API key. Force Space Elmo to shut down all third party apps using the API, raise the cost of dickitude,

Chaos

@paul what volume of Twitter DAUs use a third party app?

Gq Tha Teacha

@paul Smfh 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️
