I think my favorite use of emoji responses on Slack/Discord/etc is when someone just latches onto a particular word in a message and attaches its emoji, with no semantic content intended. E.g. someone'll say "Sorry, the bus is running late" and someone else will just slap a 🚌 on there to confirm that they did indeed notice and recognize the word "bus"

@danbruno wow, the comments here make me feel so cozy / seen / full of a sense of belonging.
Gotta acknowledge those messages so the poster doesn’t feel alone when no one is replying and you’ve also got nothing valuable to reply!
Someone’s like “my cat is being so silly today” and maybe I don’t have time to ask how your cat is being silly between meetings but a little 🐱 will let you know I appreciate the tidbit!

But geeze I’m just really so glad to hear there are other people that do this 😅

@danbruno Me too! I also love inside jokes, like on my Discord chat, anytime someone says "fish" you do an egg emoji, and vice versa.

@danbruno My favorite usage is (according to a friend of mine) "absolute avant-garde" in using the emojis to mean completely different things
🛃 isn't "customs", it's "chatting". "typing on a computer". "you're typing nonsense"
🛂 isn't "passport_control", it's "reading". "closely inspecting your post".

then there's the reactions that mean absolutely nothing that I absolutely adore
🚉 means nothing. not even station. it just Looks Funny, and so I use it on reactions sometimes when it Feels Right.
🎑 is another one of these.

@danbruno Then there's also when people decide to cobble a word together and you get a reaction line that says 🅱️ 🇻 🇸

Schrottkatze :wizardcat:

@danbruno gonna start doing this but not using emojis anywhere else just to confuse people

Madison :blob_cat_coffee:

@danbruno This is far and away my favorite thing to do on any form of reactionable media.

@danbruno I truly have never in my life been called out like this before

Sorry, I spent too much time on this.

@danbruno there's some funny Matrix bots doing that automatically too, like any message containing 'cat' (even as part of a word) got a cat emoji react

@danbruno I always wondered if I was being too weird by doing that, I saw it but had nothing constructive to add so 🍍

@danbruno Much like reactji in general tend to get used as 'body language' analogues (See: Because Internet by Gretchen McCullough), I like thinking of that sort of thing as roughly fitting the same role as an "uh huh", nod, hand gesture, etc.

"I'm here, I'm listening, I don't want to interrupt, keep going"

@danbruno I've taken to responding to one-emoji messages with a reaction emoji of the same emoji
