Just out of curiosity crowd: What happens if I send a direct message or mention to an account whose instance is currently down due to whichever reason? Will that message reach that particular person once the instance is running again? Will there at some point be some notify that this message couldn't be delivered?

@z428 Your server will attempt to deliver the message several times with exponentially increasing intervals before giving up. Most platforms will try for one week or longer.

Usually no delivery notification is presented.

Same applies for usual posts (actually private messages are just normal posts but with restricted visibility).

@z428 Also since your server will retry with increasingly longer intervals the recipient might not get your message as soon as their instance is up. Usually there is some delay (5-30 minutes) but might be hours if downtime was considerable.
