For whatever reason I've been recently wistful for workhorse food from specific cheap unassuming restaurants when I lived in the Boston area.

Super burrito from Anna's Taqueria in Porter Square, falafel wrap from Moody's Falafel Palace (RIP) in Central Square, sausage egg and cheese croissant from a Dunkin Donuts I used to stop at in Needham....

these are some of my many madeleines I guess

@darius Aleppo (replaced Moody's) isn't bad

Darius Kazemi

@kfan good to know, I was wondering

@darius i think about the Anna's burrito as well sometimes, partly because i now live in the planet's burrito capital and wonder how well it would measure up to my current very high standards.
i also think about the sweet potato + pecan pancakes at the deluxe town diner in watertown, those were legit fantastic, though probably simple to replicate. hmm...

Darius Kazemi

@jplebreton deluxe town diner yesss! I think I usually got French toast or some other fancy pancakes

Darius Kazemi

@misc it is amazing to me that I have only been back twice in 8 years and one of those times I spent mostly in Worcester (quite happily, but still)

Bryant Durrell

@darius Aw, man, Anna’s.

The Portuguese breakfast plate at the Neighborhood Restaurant in Union Square, too. “All breakfasts served with cream of wheat.”

Darius Kazemi

@bryantd yes absolutely! I remember when we were briefly Union Square neighbors! I recall their sickly sweet cream of wheat with great fondness though I'll admit I was sad when they changed their portions from "could feed three horses" to "could feed one horse"

@darius Has anyone lived here and NOT developed at least an occasional Anna's craving?

Blake C. Stacey

@darius The Anna's super burrito is one of those "perfect for what it is" foods.

@darius It's interesting to me that you can tell exactly when someone lived in the area by which food they remember.

The food circuit evolves so fast...

Mx. Aria Stewart

@darius The egg sandwich or popover from the Clover truck in Dewey square.

Darius Kazemi

@aredridel yes yes yes, almost included the egg sandwich

Darius Kazemi

@christa oh nice so they changed the name to something less uhhhh Irish haha

Dan Schmidt

@darius I regularly wistfully think back to the falafel wraps (the hot sauce was the key!) from the Falafel Palace. Another weekly lunch staple was the Suan La Chow Show at Mary Chung.

Dave Coustan (Extraface)

@darius thai from rod dee?

Darius Kazemi

@extraface good call!

meetar

@darius the boca grande in kendall when it was still linoleum and bare flourescents, with an assembly line of workers shuckling side to side as they constructed 2-pound burritos in 15 seconds

Darius Kazemi

@meetar oh wow yup I remember that, truly something

meetar

@darius half for lunch and half for dinner

@darius Anna's burritos might be the #1 thing I miss about Boston. Also huge Puerto Rican combo plates from Izzy's near Central (learned just now, by looking up spelling, that they closed last year 🙁), which sank many an afternoon's productivity the year I worked around the corner

Thomas Sibley

@darius ahhh! I still think about and crave Anna’s to this day despite being on the other side of the country for over 10 years now and not having had an Anna’s burrito since I left.
