Gregory's Server@tomw Messenger apps rarely interoperated. (Yahoo and MSN did for a bit, I think?) But we did have cool apps like Trillian and Pidgin that reimplemented proprietary messenger apps' protocols.

@arktronic I really miss using Adium (Mac client using the libpurple library from Pidgin). I recall adding Facebook Messenger for a bit when it supported XMPP.
