Could we please... stop calling it "migration"? And could we please stop referring to people who swap one online service for another as "refugees"? Pretty please?

@inquiline I'm just concerned because in my part of the world we have been drowning thousands of refugees in the Mediterranean for the past few years, and I find someone referring to themselves as a "Tw***er refugee" very insulting.

@acousticmirror Yep, I fully understand that context--and agree that it's insensitive. I was thinking only about like animal species migrating seasonally or to a better grazing ground or something for "migration" (I was calling the Bird-->Mastodon route the Digital Flyway for a little while, like the Pacific Flyway or other migratory routes). But refugee, not ok at all; and none of it to make light.

@acousticmirror And the STS-er in me knows better than to be casual about biological metaphors in any case! |
@acousticmirror I don't mind migration as a descriptor/metaphor but I agree 100% on refugee (and I suppose "migrant" is iffy)
