wowww, I just got my first follower from the Vivaldi browser's new server. They just announced *today* that users of the Vivaldi browser can embed the vivaldi.net server into the browser as a widget, or connect it to other Mastodon servers (I think, if I'm reading it right)

(vivaldi is an experimental web browser)

@darius I’m not a fan of the kitchen sink approach for my personal use -at terns but I do kind of enjoy seeing Vivaldi continue to carry the torch dropped by Netscape Communicator.

@djsundog Yeah! It's not for me either. I applaud all experimentation though, basically.

Remember Flock? I used to use Flock

@darius @djsundog I used Cyberdog for its brief existence. 😅

Leonardo Flores

@darius @djsundog It lasted a little over a year 1996-7. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberdog

Not a bad place to take a break from the browser wars.

@darius @djsundog Oh gosh, Flock! I'd completely forgotten about that one. I remember liking the idea of it, but it never quite felt right.

@darius yeah! I'd been trying to migrate from dot-social so today I did it (and migrated to vivaldi, thinking it might help them federate!) :D

@darius I don't think I'd call it "experimental" - it's been around for about 6 years now (ex Opera people) and keeps on turning up on Android a lot too ...

Darius Kazemi

@yojimbo I think their product features are highly experimental and that's great. I meant it in terms of "willingness to try things that are unusual" rather than "unstable branch"

@darius Ah, fair enough :-) that's a nice distinction.

@darius Correction, other... "Fediverse" servers 👍

With more #Fediverse centric features and benefits coming soon 🙂

Also just posted was an announcement about support for the You.com search engine as an integrated option to choose as a default in #Vivaldi.

@darius FWIW I use Vivaldi as my main browser these days, largely because it has built-in RSS support. This is the first I've heard about it having built-in Mastodon support.

I use Vivaldi as my main browser because of one thing mainly: it doesn't change. There were no significant UI redesigns since 1.0. The changes that they did make were all in service of new features that wouldn't work in the previous design, and the scope of such changes is always as limited as possible.

It's also like the old Opera which I'm very much used to. It's also not dumbed down like everything these days; there are more settings than I'll ever need.

Though another thing that is also exactly like the old Opera is unfortunately their attitude towards quality control.
