It’s worse than that.
I read a while back that factories that stick googly eyes on their robots have fewer accidents and injuries, seemingly because “thing has eyes” is enough to make human workers’ brains give the robots more attention and personal space.
They were working on a system to use artificial eyes to telegraph what the robot is going to do, but it turned out that’s not necessary. Just make it a little cute and fewer people walk into its workspace.

@silvermoon82 @aeva I think that's a good thing. Robots are currently treated like second-class humans in most factories.

@silvermoon82 tbh I think this is one of our more endearing qualities

@silvermoon82 I'll have to remember to put googly eyes on my luggage if I ever travel by air again

Humans are so primed for social interaction that we'll pack-bond with anything. I think it's a prime driver in how we domesticated wolves.
"Look!" Grug points excitedly at the sleeping hulking pile of fur, muscle, and tooth. "It's friend-shaped! I'm gonna love it."
Meanwhile, the wolf wakes up to the most *exquisite* feeling of something scratching right behind its ears...
