"Why popular YouTubers are building their own sites"

@Gargron Hopefully, we'll see more platforms come out for reliably streaming video content. I feel this space is pretty noncompetitive at the moment due to the high costs and relative lack of interest. @mwt Yeah, I'm a little disappointed that PeerTube is not part of this but at the same time even I have reservations about using PeerTube due to the WebTorrent privacy implications @Gargron I think there's a big trade-off between full decentralization and privacy (for now at least). For some things, federation seems to be able to get the best of both. Though, I think video may require a new model. |
@Gargron (Have not watched the video) I reckon one very obvious and logical reason is due to very extreme and unnecessary censorship and/or getting monetized has become so much of a chore that a creator sees fit to migrate elsewhere, be it their own website or some other semi-popular website.
I used to make YouTube videos myself, never got popular and part of me is VERY HAPPY about that because I absolutely cannot stand how YouTube, as it is today, is run. In a few words; it's absurd.
